I had four days off from work and did almost nothing. In the back of my head, I thought: hey, I could use this time for writing!

And then I didn't.

Instead, I played Dragon Age: Inquisition so much. (My roommate [personal profile] dungeonmarm has started replaying the game and of course that made me want to play again, too.

On the book front, I decided to start with the books I have in a bag next to the couch, specifically because I put them there to read, and I started with Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I'm a little underwhelmed, tbh. I used to love Gaiman's writing passionately, and I don't know if I've just grown out of his style or if it's the first person POV that's doing me in. I guess I'll give it another try tomorrow.

I originally planned an entry celebrating the things from my to-do list that I completed yesterday, but then I remembered that Killing Eve was on Hulu and started watching that instead.

Guys.

Guys.

WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME TO WATCH THIS? I remember seeing some gifs on tumblr and thinking: Hey, this looks right up my alley! But I didn't watch it until now because I didn't know it was legally available! (wow, I have MOVED ON from my pirating days, what even???)

I just finished episode 4/8 and I feel like I have run a marathon. Do I need to be hydrated? Do I need chocolate? My mind is blown and I don't know how to feel. What is existing if it's not to watch this show?

Non-spoilery rundown: We have an assassin and an assistant in MI5. If you like cat-and-mouse with a little procedural thrown in, conspiracy and shadow organizations and a truly phenomenal femslash ship? This is it. Watch this. Sandra Oh plays the titular Eve and she is glorious.

UGH. MY HEART.

I'm going to finish this, and then I need fic STAT.

It occurred to me a moment or two ago that I've been seeing a lot of people post lists of the books they were intending on reading for the year, and I realized that—following my usual pattern, the less fic I read, the more original fiction I read instead, and I have all these paper books that I would love to dig into. So! A book list for the year is incoming!

I'm also thinking that a list of my fic WIPs would also not be a terrible thing to invest some time in...

Also, I fell apart wildly on snowflake, because they started asking me things I had no idea about? But now they're doing the friending meme!

Yesterday, I felt like I'd adulted so much! And then I realized I only did three things. ^^;;

* I had an optometrist appointment with a glaucoma specialist in Little Rock, and was told by the optometrist and the technician that I had really abnormal optic nerve pathways, but that it was probably due to being a premature baby and not actual glaucoma. (The spot where the optic nerve goes through the hole in the back of your eye? Mine are really big, and they've been that way for years.) So I have an appointment next year to keep checking it, and I didn't have a copay for a specialist, so double win.

* After my dad took me home (He's retired now, so he thinks its his job to drive me everywhere.) we had lunch at a local Japanese restaurant, and then went to Home Depot so I could get a sink snake for my clogged bathroom sink. Then I unclogged my sink and cleaned my toilet, which was basically everything I had energy for.

*Things I should do today—do the dishes, take out the trash, sweep my bathroom, place my new bathmats and throw out my old one, and maybe vacuum? That might be wishful thinking.

Day 8

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

This is always one of my least favorite challenges because I hate everything I write. D:<

I'm just going off the things I've written in 2018, because otherwise I just continue to suggest the same things over and over. I only wrote Barry/Leonard this year, with a touch of Lisa/Cisco.

1) and this of all my hopes

I wrote this for the 2018 coldflash exchange, and it has a lot of things I like: Len and Barry teaming up, time travel, a weak casefic plot, and team ups with other members of the DCU.

2) You and I, unselfed

Another attempt at a soulmate fic. Barry waits until Len is stuck in a hospital bed before finally having the talk about their bond. Tried for cute, not sure I managed it.

3) These Captivated Hours

My second foray into coldflash omegaverse fic? It's weird, but not too terrible. XD Leonard is manipulative, Barry has his feelings hurt, and time is ticking down on Eobard Thawne's offer.

My store had inventory on Sunday (from 3:30am to 9:30am, uuuuugh) and then my dad came over to do his laundry and hang out. I passed out around 5:30pm and didn't wake up until 8am this morning. So that's how my weekend has been. :D That also means that I've fallen behind on [community profile] snowflake_challenge. The last I did was day 4, so here's 5-7:

Day 5 )

Day 6 )

Day 7 )

Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

OMG. OMG, I—how do I choose? My mind, of course, immediately jumps to the Flash, so I just. Can't choose just one?

Youtube scenes from are a godsend )

Ugh, coldflash, how have you managed to hook me for so long, I just don't understand.

This one is a little rough for me, because (as I mentioned in the last entry) I've been reading more books and less fic. This is what AO3 bookmarks are for, I suppose. ;)

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Okay, it's confession time. Although my primary fandom is The Flash I don't... read any fic. I really want to! And if you read fic in that fandom and want to leave me recs that would be great!

change my friends to enemies (show me how it's all my fault) by saekhwa.

This was written years and years ago, but it still gives me happiness. an X-Men(First Class)/Losers crossover in which Roque gets mutant powers and a new family with the X-men. It's Roque/Armando and has healing and redemption and Roque fighting to let people back in. Dark stuff happens, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Warnings are at the end of the fic.

Drunk Minds Speak Sober Hearts by m4x_87.

One of the few finished coldflash stories I have bookmarked on AO3. Barry gets whammied by Rainbow Raider, but it's lust instead of anger. This gets explicit near the end, and tbh the first chapter isn't that great until about half-way through? But it has solid Cisco voice, a charmingly scheming Leonard Snart, and a Barry Allen who knows exactly how to get under his skin. I re-read this today for this rec list, and it still made me laugh.

those three words over even "I love you" by QLaLa.

My second coldflash recommendation. Set during the episode "Family of Rogues", Barry decided to go undercover on a heist with Lewis and Leonard Snart. Leonard had feelings about this. There's snark and sexytimes and accidental feelings. It's lovely. Also explicit. Read this if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed.

For my last rec, I really have to go with The Night War: 60th Anniversary Edition by praximeter.

If there is one MCU fic that should be required reading, it's this one. Bucky Barnes' wartime memoir, and—guys, guys, just read it. It's painful and genuine and it's about loss and hope and love and how war changes people. It technically says it's Steve/Bucky, but honestly I consider this to be one of the most beautiful gen novels I have ever read.

A bunch of my friends are doing the snowflake challenge this year, and I feel like I might have enough energy to join in!

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Emotionally, it's been kind of a rough year. I'm not professionally diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure I had an intense depressive downswing earlier in the year that knocked everything out of place. So, in no particular order, things that have kept me going:

* Reading: I love love love Thriftbooks. They sell a lot of used books and they have incredible deals. I've found so many things that I love because their prices aren't prohibitive. I have been reading a lot of fantasy, which isn't unusual, but I've also risked my time on novels that have ripped my heart out, and historical nonfiction (specifically about the AIDS crisis, for a story I'm writing, and the golden age of pirates.) And a lot of fic. So. Much. Fic.

* Chai: Last year, [personal profile] dungeonmarm's parents bought me a huge thing of Big Train Vanilla Chai, which is my most favorite instant chai mix that I've ever found. I just finished my last cup a few days ago, and they got me another huge bag for Christmas this year! Thank you, Jay's parents, for giving me my most favorite drink!

* Cats: I cannot overstate this one. I have a Siamese named Jill who will let me do whatever I feel like. If I want to pick her up from where she was sleeping and squish her in a hug? She's cool with that. Do I want to bury my face in her fur and pretend I don't exist for a minute? She's cool with that, too. Alex, my tabby, isn't as forgiving, but as long as I don't make any sudden movements, she will lay next to me and go to sleep for a few hours. It makes me feel loved every time.

* Music: specifically, the Steven Universe Soundtrack Vol 1. It is sweet and good and catchy, and Here Comes a Thought is so meaningful to me that I can't even explain it.

I swear I had a couple of topics I wanted to write about, but hell if I know what I wanted to talk about now.

So instead of a serious topic, has anyone around here been reading The Wicked + The Divine?

And if so, what about Kieron Gillen's new comic, Die? I'm fascinated with both of them and would love someone to flail at.

So, I meant to talk about this on Monday, but then I dove into retail hell and have only now resurfaced from work exhaustion.

Monday, December 3rd, was my first day off this week. (I have three? By some magical accident? But I'm also not giving them back!) It was around ten in the morning, and I thought to myself: I could be a normal human, get dressed in something that's not pajamas, and take our rent check to the office! I'll actually get a receipt this time! And while I'm out there, I can check the mail, too!

I talk to myself a lot in mental exclamation points in hope that the pretend excitement will translate into actual excitement.

So I wrote out the check and walked over to the main office. On my way, I noticed a bird sitting close to the curb, in a parking space, and because I talk to animals all the time, I said, "Hi, bird!" It fluttered, but didn't get very far. It looked injured, and I immediately became Very Concerned and told it to be careful, and went to the office.

Which was closed. At ten AM. On a Monday. WTF, our apartment complex is ridic.

Birb adventure! )

I am super way behind on Nano, but I have at least written something every day, so that's something. I have a four day weekend, so I'm hoping to catch up, but if I don't, that's okay. I've decided that I'm not going to stress about it. Between work and the US midterm elections, I'm already worn out enough without putting my own expectations on top of it.

Thinking of fun things instead: tonight dad and I went to see Frankie Valli at Verizon Arena. I mostly went to keep my dad company, and only sort of expected to enjoy the concert, but I was pleasantly surprised. The guy is 84, but his voice (and falsetto) were clear as a bell. He was also super charming. There were a couple of things that annoyed me, but they were all audience, and nothing to do with him at all. He was lovely.

(Annoying audience things: Being loud and annoying directly behind me when I'm purposefully trying not to engage with your conversation. ugh. Clapping along with the music off beat. Or my favorite: during one of the slow songs, everyone brought out their phones to shine the flashlights like lighters—except for the guy three rows ahead of me, who was just waving his phone. The audience was very old.)

I hope everyone else had a good night! I'm off to try and improve my word count.
