Also, I fell apart wildly on snowflake, because they started asking me things I had no idea about? But now they're doing the friending meme!

Day 8

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

This is always one of my least favorite challenges because I hate everything I write. D:<

I'm just going off the things I've written in 2018, because otherwise I just continue to suggest the same things over and over. I only wrote Barry/Leonard this year, with a touch of Lisa/Cisco.

1) and this of all my hopes

I wrote this for the 2018 coldflash exchange, and it has a lot of things I like: Len and Barry teaming up, time travel, a weak casefic plot, and team ups with other members of the DCU.

2) You and I, unselfed

Another attempt at a soulmate fic. Barry waits until Len is stuck in a hospital bed before finally having the talk about their bond. Tried for cute, not sure I managed it.

3) These Captivated Hours

My second foray into coldflash omegaverse fic? It's weird, but not too terrible. XD Leonard is manipulative, Barry has his feelings hurt, and time is ticking down on Eobard Thawne's offer.

My store had inventory on Sunday (from 3:30am to 9:30am, uuuuugh) and then my dad came over to do his laundry and hang out. I passed out around 5:30pm and didn't wake up until 8am this morning. So that's how my weekend has been. :D That also means that I've fallen behind on [community profile] snowflake_challenge. The last I did was day 4, so here's 5-7:

Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

OMG. OMG, I—how do I choose? My mind, of course, immediately jumps to the Flash, so I just. Can't choose just one?

Youtube scenes from are a godsend )

Ugh, coldflash, how have you managed to hook me for so long, I just don't understand.

This one is a little rough for me, because (as I mentioned in the last entry) I've been reading more books and less fic. This is what AO3 bookmarks are for, I suppose. ;)

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Okay, it's confession time. Although my primary fandom is The Flash I don't... read any fic. I really want to! And if you read fic in that fandom and want to leave me recs that would be great!

change my friends to enemies (show me how it's all my fault) by saekhwa.

This was written years and years ago, but it still gives me happiness. an X-Men(First Class)/Losers crossover in which Roque gets mutant powers and a new family with the X-men. It's Roque/Armando and has healing and redemption and Roque fighting to let people back in. Dark stuff happens, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Warnings are at the end of the fic.

Drunk Minds Speak Sober Hearts by m4x_87.

One of the few finished coldflash stories I have bookmarked on AO3. Barry gets whammied by Rainbow Raider, but it's lust instead of anger. This gets explicit near the end, and tbh the first chapter isn't that great until about half-way through? But it has solid Cisco voice, a charmingly scheming Leonard Snart, and a Barry Allen who knows exactly how to get under his skin. I re-read this today for this rec list, and it still made me laugh.

those three words over even "I love you" by QLaLa.

My second coldflash recommendation. Set during the episode "Family of Rogues", Barry decided to go undercover on a heist with Lewis and Leonard Snart. Leonard had feelings about this. There's snark and sexytimes and accidental feelings. It's lovely. Also explicit. Read this if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed.

For my last rec, I really have to go with The Night War: 60th Anniversary Edition by praximeter.

If there is one MCU fic that should be required reading, it's this one. Bucky Barnes' wartime memoir, and—guys, guys, just read it. It's painful and genuine and it's about loss and hope and love and how war changes people. It technically says it's Steve/Bucky, but honestly I consider this to be one of the most beautiful gen novels I have ever read.

A bunch of my friends are doing the snowflake challenge this year, and I feel like I might have enough energy to join in!

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Emotionally, it's been kind of a rough year. I'm not professionally diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure I had an intense depressive downswing earlier in the year that knocked everything out of place. So, in no particular order, things that have kept me going:

* Reading: I love love love Thriftbooks. They sell a lot of used books and they have incredible deals. I've found so many things that I love because their prices aren't prohibitive. I have been reading a lot of fantasy, which isn't unusual, but I've also risked my time on novels that have ripped my heart out, and historical nonfiction (specifically about the AIDS crisis, for a story I'm writing, and the golden age of pirates.) And a lot of fic. So. Much. Fic.

* Chai: Last year, [personal profile] dungeonmarm's parents bought me a huge thing of Big Train Vanilla Chai, which is my most favorite instant chai mix that I've ever found. I just finished my last cup a few days ago, and they got me another huge bag for Christmas this year! Thank you, Jay's parents, for giving me my most favorite drink!

* Cats: I cannot overstate this one. I have a Siamese named Jill who will let me do whatever I feel like. If I want to pick her up from where she was sleeping and squish her in a hug? She's cool with that. Do I want to bury my face in her fur and pretend I don't exist for a minute? She's cool with that, too. Alex, my tabby, isn't as forgiving, but as long as I don't make any sudden movements, she will lay next to me and go to sleep for a few hours. It makes me feel loved every time.

* Music: specifically, the Steven Universe Soundtrack Vol 1. It is sweet and good and catchy, and Here Comes a Thought is so meaningful to me that I can't even explain it.

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs.

[personal profile] dungeonmarm says that I "like whatever, as long as it's well-written." I suppose he's right.

One thing that never fails to make me happy, though, are Detective AUs. I love old noir detectives, I love what they stand for, I love characters who fight for justice against a corrupt system, I love police partners falling for each other, I love hostility that turns into sex, I love whump where one of the pair is kidnapped and the other has to save them!

It's kind of difficult for me to think of many, but there are two fics of this type that definitely stick out to me.

First, there's Below Skyscrapers by aesc. It's Dean/Cas, where Dean is a detective with Victor as his partner (I love it when Victor is his partner) and Castiel is an angel brought in to work some ritual murders. It has supernatural creatures being known by civilians, it has hostility, it has slow burn, I remember it being pretty awesome.

The other that I remembered was Hindsight by rageprufrock. It's John/Rodney, and the only thing I remember is that John is a diabetic cop, and Rodney is Rodney? But it's stuck in my head. Of course, rageprufrock is amazing and I love all of her stuff. I'm tempted to do a reread. :D

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity?

My fannish origin story is pretty normal, I think. A friend in high school was reading Ronin Warrior fic, and I read off and on until my first year in college. Then I started watching Gundam Wing, and started reading Heero/Duo fic. Then I read the first Harry Potter book right before the first movie came out, and remembered thinking that there had to be fic for them, too. The first fic I ever successfully wrote was a terrible Harry/Draco fic. I was in the HP fandom until about four months after the last book, and then jumped into Kyou Kara Maou. After that I just became multifannish, and I've jumped a million fandoms since then.

I don't have more than one identity, as I've never been capable of maintaining more than one journal at a time.

My fannish name was originally Moriavis, based on an original character I wrote a million years ago. I eventually settled on lunesque, and I've switched regularly between the two ever since.

Day 3

In your own space, talk about your creative process - from what inspires you to what motivates you to how you manage to break through blocks. Does your process change depending on the type of creating you're doing?

Hmmm. Usually, the ideas come pretty easily to me. Music, art, talking with my friends. It doesn't matter what kind of fanwork I'm doing, either. I hide in my room with earphones and music and do my thing. Sometimes it's more successful than others, but it's simple.

Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I actually do this on occasion? The most recent person I friended was [personal profile] scaramouche, and I leave comments regularly on excellent fic I've read. I mean, I love kudos as a system, and I completely respect the people who suffer anxiety and find it a better way to interact, but I sincerely miss comments and the sort of community they brought.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

...

Let me figure this out.

1) I would love some sort of like, Violent Messiahs short fan movie. VM Needs more love, damn it! Or really, any Violent Messiahs fanwork.

2) Fanvids for The Bletchley Circle, because Susan and Millie and Jean and Lucy! If you haven't watched that show, you desperately owe yourself the opportunity.

3) Good Wincestiel fic recs. I was sort of a casual fan before, but [personal profile] kate's story got me reinvested. ^^;

Okay, I'm jumping on the bandwagon. I'm bored and I miss fandom and everyone on DW. So!

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Every time I do this one, I always try to do new works, but I haven't really done any new works lately. So I'll just take a look at my favorites. This is absolutely going to have some repeats.

1) The Narrow Way

Mostly, I'm just proud of my research on this. Every single town I mention exists. I researched hotels and libraries and a million other small details in this, and even though it hasn't been finished yet, and has been thoroughly jossed in the meantime, I still have affection for it. I'm still slowly puttering away at chapter 5 of this thing, and hope remains high that I'll finish it someday.

2) 1) Here Mid the Ash Trees

Violent Messiahs is the canon on my heart, I think. It has no fandom that I know of, but I love it enough that I don't care. I wrote this after a night when I'd emailed the writer, Joshua Dysart, and he told me, regretfully, that there probably wasn't ever going to be more Violent Messiahs. It broke down something in my mind, and now I have an entire universe populated in my head, of what would happen if I ever took up the helm of Violent Messiahs. This story is what came out.

I can't tell you how much my teenage mind latched onto this comic when it first came out. It's just so gothic and over the top and beautiful and it hurts. If this story makes people feel half as strongly as the canon made me feel when I discovered it, then I would consider my job well done.

3) At the End/Lost Upon Waking

Nothing was quite as satisfying for me this year as finally, finally finishing this story. I had endless encouragement, so many people who dragged me kicking and screaming and crying over the finish line. It was this story that made me realize how much my writing muscles have atrophied. Writing is hard, and I'm not quite good at it anymore. But! Roque and Cougar and I love them and Clay is a repressed dickhead. Pretty much how I like them. :D

If you want to play, do it!

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1) [community profile] fandomsecrets

I used to follow this comm on livejournal, but I stopped because it became so very toxic to me that I was unhappy reading it. Either it's gotten much more pleasant since it came to dreamwidth, or I just don't care what anyone says anymore, but I do drop in to read this daily. I don't belong to the comm, but there's something pleasant about not looking at it for a couple of days and then having lots of secrets to read. :)

2)[tumblr.com profile] medievalpoc

I've been following this blog for months now, and I think it's absolutely fantastic. The blogger focuses on the erasure of POC in art history from an American POV, and they're very thorough and well-sourced. I think this is a good blog for anyone, not just with those who have knowledge of the failings of American education.

3) [community profile] flow_arts

Sadly, a lot of the communities I follow on DW seem to be defunct, but I really enjoy this right now. I'm just slowly getting into flow arts myself, but it seems pretty cool. The community has nifty videos and weekly check ins, too.

So, the [community profile] snowflake_challenge has begun again for the year. I'm tentative about doing this, mostly because I have been so fannishly unconnected this year, and I've created almost nothing. Still. Here goes nothing.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I decided not to repeat myself from last year, because why make it easy on myself, right? So in no particular order:

1) Little Do Men Perceive (A03)
Summary: Linda Danvers slips through the cracks of the world after the events of Infinite Crisis. Meanwhile, there's a new kidnapping ring in Gotham targeting the transients like Linda, which results in Linda, Batwoman, and the Question teaming up to shut them down.
Pairing: None
Rating: PG-13
Date: 5-20-10

I wrote this for Comicsbigbang in 2010, because for some reason it seemed like the best thing in the world to write this and Here mid the Ash Trees in the same time frame. It has my three favorite female superheroes in it, and IDEK. I just love Linda and Kate and Renee, okay?

2) At the End
Summary: With no one else in the world, Cougar and Roque turn toward each other.
Pairing: Roque/Cougar
Rating: NC-17
Date: 8-2-12

I wrote this for two reasons. One, [profile] lady_krysis had been sad about the amount of Jensen/Cougar in fandom, and two, I discovered that there were no Roque/Cougar fics on A03. How is this possible, I asked? Why hasn't someone written a long, delicious story of how those two can work together? So I wrote this. This is actually the first half of the story—I simply ran out of time to write the second half. Someday I'll get to it.

3)

SPN Vid - Surface from lunesque on Vimeo.

Title: Surface
Fandom: Supernatural
Music: Surface by Orisha
Length: 2:59
Summary: After hell, Dean confuses the line between violence and love. Dean/Alastair, Dean/Castiel

Lyrics: )

Looking back at this now, I'm a little embarrassed? But also very proud, because it's the first fanvid I ever made. Plus, ALASTAIR! DEAN'S FACE! Now I look at it and see all the things I did wrong, and I totes commit the cardinal sin of the video being wedded to the lyrics, but I finished it, you know? :D

Day 10

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post. Or maybe a combination of the two. Make a recs list, link to their archives or master lists or websites, maybe create a Fanlore page for them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So, the first...oh, six times I read this, my brain kept going Greg Rucka? But then I realized it's probably about fandom creators (I didn't figure this out myself, btw. I looked at the links in the comments) and that's a bit harder for me. I don't really have any particular favorites?

I can only really think of two at the moment, so I suppose I'll give them honorable mentions. :)

First, I have been on the Supernatural Fandom Kick of Doom lately. I've been just devouring everything. One of those things is [tumblr.com profile] flutiebear's Dean/Castiel meta. I don't always subscribe to her ideas, but her meta is always thoughtful and well put together, even if it is shaded through the lens of a hardcore Dean/Cas shipper.

Second, there's Krystal Beisick. Mostly, I adore her deeply for her Kate/Renee stuff (and the fan comic she drew with a collaborator that gave me some much needed closure on Renee Montoya, since DC's new 52 has fucked her over.) She also does some great Mass Effect stuff, too.

Day Nine

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Day 8

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, I definitely want to focus on answering comments better than I have been. I don't get very many comments anymore, simply because my writing output has gone down so much, but I really want to interact with people more, so that's really important.

Also, I kind of want to do a podfic? IDEK. I've never done it before, and I read far too fast.

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've been sitting here for a while now wondering what to write. The thing is, I talk about everything that I do in this journal, regardless of if it's fandom or not.

Hm. I was a paid personal baker for a while? I love baking, and I love finding new recipes to try. One of my favorites is cherry almond biscotti, which was always so good. I think the most complicated thing I ever made was a German Chocolate Cake for work (which, ha, it's a hard cake! I apparently knew nothing about it before I started baking it.) Also, I cannot cut cakes in half well. It's always such a mess and layer cakes are horribly lopsided when I make them. It's embarrassing.

But I used to bake for [profile] the_gentlmans_revolt's family for a while. It was really fun and nifty.

Let's see what else. I know how to sew well enough to repair holes in my clothing, but I'm not good enough to sew actual clothes or use patterns. Also, I can only do it by hand. Sewing machines are the death of me.
lunesque: Linda DanversQuestion, and Batwoman kick ass (my dream team)

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is really hard for me, because most of the communities I follow are pretty slow or dormant/defunct. I totally feel like I'm copping out, because I'm including my own communities.

1) [community profile] poetry_fiction - This is an annual challenge I run where I give out poetry prompts every year, and we get at least 1,000 words. The poet changes every year, and I welcome both fan fiction and original fiction. Any tropes, pairing, gen, etc is accepted. We also have a daily prompt challenge in July. I built this community specifically to be open and welcoming to all writers, and there's also permanent amnesty on all challenges.

2) [community profile] poet_inspired - I created this community after running [community profile] poetry_fiction for two years, because I came to the horrible realization that I was completely ignoring a ton of creators. This is the community to go to if you like the idea of [community profile] poetry_fiction, but you don't actually fic. [community profile] poet_inspired is open to any art, fanart, photo manip, meta, fanmix, knitting patterns, podfic, and any other artistic endeavor that I'm not thinking of right now because it's two in the morning.

3) [community profile] omnomnom - this community is just full of delicious recipes. I'm a little sad, because as a vegetarian, there's a lot of recipes I can't make, but it still all looks delicous and amazing.

Honorable mention

[community profile] batwomen - This would have been my top one, because OMG A COMMUNITY FOR RENEE MONTOYA/KATE KANE!! But it's so dead. The last thing posted was in 1-11. This is really disappointing, as Kate has a series!!!! It's awesome!!! She's fighting monsters with freaking Wonder Woman! Even though Renee has only appeared once in the new 52 (as a picture on the wall) she's still a part of Kate's past and I'm just all dfs [iejw fkjeskfjd;ijsd;lkxjx flk over her series, although I feel like she's dating Maggie only because there's a whole two lesbians we know about in Gotham.
