This was a much better day than yesterday!

1. Gaming Dice: It's a six-sided die. It's half-transparent green and half deep, dark amber and there's blue sparkles on top of both sides

2. Diamine Inkvent: Chameleon ink called Ambience. It's a really pretty orange ink overlaid with pink sparkles

3. Cult Pens: Pilot Supergrip G retractable ballpoint in neon orange, with neon orange ink. Very cool! And fun that the ink calendar and this one matched today. Cost: $1.90. Total Cost: $109.38

4. Cacao & Cardamom: Hazelnut Crunch. Basically clusters of chocolate covered hazelnuts. Yum!

Someone on my flist, [personal profile] shipperslist, is doing BooksandLaLa's reading challenges this year. I posted them here last year with every intention of doing it and then I promptly forgot. But, guys!? Guess what? I just went through the list again and I COMPLETED THE COVER CHALLENGE!!!! I didn't event mean to and I totally did it. Now, this is only because the Challenge creator says she doesn't actually care what month you read the books in. Also, I'm including one book on my list that I dnf'd, but who knows, maybe I'll pick it up and finish it before the end of the year!

So, here's the Cover Challenge (All of these things need to be pictured on the cover of the book) and the books I read that fulfilled the challenge

January: Pattern --MEN AT ARMS
February: Skyline --VICTORY OF EAGLES
March: Books --PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION (This is the one I dnf'd)
April: Animals --A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES
May: Eyes --DAWN
June: Celestial --THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE
July: Technology --THE SONG OF ACHILLES
August: Transportation --HIS MAJESTY'S DRAGON
September: Foliage --LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE
October: Weapons --BLACK POWDER WAR
November: Food & Drink --WEYWARD
December: Monochromatic --BEAUTYLAND

This makes me so happy! I've never finished a book reading challenge before!

This makes me think I should make a more concerted effort to try next years challenge, which is as follows:

TITLE CHALLENGE (All these things need to be in the title of the book)

January: "Before" and "After"
February: Keyboard keys (letters, numbers, punctuation, enter, esc, space, tab, etc)
March: "This" and "That" also "Those" and "These"
April: Ordinal Numbers (First, second, third, fourth, etc --also "last" or "final")
May: "Make" also "Makes" and "Making"
June: One-Word title
July: Occupations
August: Groups & Clubs (also includes names of clubs, leagues, societies, etc)
September: "Me" "My" "Mine"
October: Parts of a house (Not furniture, structural)
November: Instructional Title
December: Superlatives (Best, Worst, Funniest, Brightest, etc)

COVER CHALLENGE (All these things need to be on the cover of the book)

January: Internal Body Parts (includes blood)
February: Silhouette
March: Action/Movement
April: (wearable) accessories
May: Border/Frame (around the whole cover)
June: Wings
July: A metallic element (Must obviously be metallic, not just yellow or gray)
August: Damage (Books with covers that look damaged some way in the picture, not actual damage to the book)
September: Fire & Smoke
October: Doors & Keys (also locks)
November: Reflection (graphic elements that are reflected)
December: Music (includes instruments)

Excited to see what I can come up with for next year!

Had some bad news to start the day. My mom was exposed to Covid yesterday, so she can no longer host Christmas or even be with us at Christmas. My first reaction was to be relieved I wasn't going to have to go out that day, but my sister said she'd host. Almost got out of social engagement for the day! I love my family, but family dinners are a LOT for me to handle.

In any case, let's get on with it!

1. Gaming Dice: I was wrong about being done with the elf dice. Today was a clear 12-sided die with an elf inside.

2. Diamine Inkvent: A Standard gray-blue ink called Overcast

3. Cult Pens: No link today as I couldn't find the exact one on the site. It's washi tape with some animals on it. 15mm X 7m. Cost: $3.80 (This was the cost of washi of similar size). Total Cost: $107.48

4. Cacao & Cardamom: A peppermint patty in the shape of a christmas sweater. It was creamy and really good. I'd like to have a few more of those!

Today was a pretty good day!

1. Gaming Dice: A very dark green and orange swirl 20-sided die

2. Diamine Inkvent: An extreme sheen called Laurel. The base color is green and the sheen is metallic magenta

3. Cult Pens: Pentel Tadio Fountain Pen. It's a light turquoise and came in a black velvet pen cover. Cost: $17.82. Total Cost: $103.68

4. Cacao & Cardamom: Three chocolate discs with candied citrus and nuts. Pretty good!

I did indeed jinx myself yesterday...

1. Gaming Dice: A clear 10-sided percentage die with an elf inside. (I think this might be the last of the set)

2. Diamine Inkvent: A standard purple ink called Gala

3. Cult Pens: Copic Marker Pen in color Lapis Lazuli. All I know is the pen on the last day better be a fountain pen and better wow me! Cost: $4.77. Total Cost: $85.86

4. Cacao & Cardamom: It said Cranberry Rosemary on the package. In actuality it was cranberry rosemary flavored caramel covered by white chocolate in the shape of a snowman. Not sure how to describe the flavor. Part of me liked it and part of me didn't.

omens: Tiny Titans Robin, with robins (dcu - tiny titans robinses)

I saw (what I think was) a sharp-shinned hawk in the tree the other day. What a petite little dude! I thought it was a mourning dove at first bc it was a mottled brown from what I could see, but something in me was like, "get the binoculars!" The tail twitching, I think. It reminded me of the long ass tails of the magpies in Belgium. Twitch, twitch, twitch. But yeah, in the binoculars, the big orange eyes and the tail striping, very very cute, but he zipped off a second later so I didn't have time to note details ;_; come back lil sharpie

Junco thru my filthy window <3

Honestly, I thought I had more to say when I opened up dw to post, but there's just nothing? Feeling kinda like going back to bed today. I think it's going to be a no-focus kind of day.

I needed a palate cleanser of something light after my last two reads, so from the back of my unread drawer came out Liza Picard's Elizabeth's London: Everyday Life in Elizabethan London. My Tudor-reading phase was a while back so the book's high page count was a bit tiring, but I did enjoy revisiting the era.

The book itself is a mix about the place that is London (in modern terms, the city of London and a bit of Greater London) with all its buildings, streets, river traffic and resources, and its people with all their habits, occupations, clothes, food, medical options, social obligations and so on. The description of various familiar areas and what they used to be like (all those open fields!) is fun for navigating by the mind's eye, and of the details of people I think for me the most interesting was their dietary habits, where they ate more different things than you'd think and also in the Elizabethan era there was a push to eat more fish, and no longer because of the old religion but in order to support the local fishing industry. Also, about how apprenticeships work, that's almost your whole life! And the systemic discrimination of outsiders in order to protect local businesses. If you're writing fiction set in the era, it's such a useful resource, as it's both useful and readable, and Picard's few editorializing choices are thoughtful (IMO).

On a meta level, I was curious about some of Picard's comments and assumptions on what was common knowledge, so I looked her up and she was 76 when she published this book in 2003! She passed away a few years ago, but she was born in 1927, which totally explains some of her comments like:
[The Waterbearers' Company] members walked the streets of London with tall conical containers on their backs holding about three gallons -- exactly the shape of an old-fashioned coke hod, for anyone who remembers coke-burning domestic stoves.

I had no idea what she was talking about and had to search "coke hod", then "coke hod kitchen", then coke "hod" kitchen before finding what she meant, i.e. coal hods. Though this would also be a regional thing as much as an age thing.

Let's do it!

1. Gaming Dice. A half golden sparkle/half swirly teal 10-sided die

2. Diamine Inkvent: A chameleon ink called Ruby Taffeta. It's a deep red with, I think, green sparkles

3. Cult Pens: Plus Glue Tape. Nothing too exciting. Cost: $2.66. Total Cost: $81.09

4. Cacao & Cardamom: A Peppermint Mocha bonbon. It was okay, but you could barely taste any peppermint.

Ah well, I guess 2 out of 4 isn't bad.
