I'm coming back from the wastelands of real life to discuss something that's driving me CRAZY.

Before that, I just want to say: hi, everyone! I'm not dead! I think I have finally learned the secret to dreamwidth—I don't write entries if I'm already texting immediately on discord or chat, so here's me testing my theory.

(It's so nice to see my friends page. I'm on dreamwidth twice a year for my [community profile] poetry_fiction challenge, but that's it. I'm so glad dreamwidth is still quiet and thriving.)

But let us get back on topic.

Let's talk about The Phantom of the Opera.

Phantom of the Opera? In 2025? It's more likely than you think. )

Ugh, thanks so much for letting me get this off my chest. It was eating me up!

Finally, I have a calm moment!

Work has been exceedingly wonky with my schedule, which means that I've spent the last four days closing-opening-closing-opening. I think the only reason I'm awake right now is because I have the day off tomorrow, so I've been spending the evening writing tumblr prompt fills.

The biggest thing I've spent most of my time on recently is my Siamese cat Jill. She got really constipated (she's husky and doesn't particularly like to exercise) and I am capital-B-broke, so I was stressing about a vet visit for her. Fortunately, the internet came to my rescue, and after several days of carefully dosed laxative, she's back to normal.

I have a super secret coldflash project that I'm working on, because I tried to ignore it and it refused to go away. It's a little different than what I usually write, so I'm curious to see how it'll be received. I also did a tumblr poll to crowdsource which of my longfics I should write next, and Resonance won by a landslide. I'm kind of surprised, since I haven't updated that story since.... 2019? And I honestly thought that most people had given up on it. Serves me right.

On the other hand, I do have 4,300 words on it, so I should really get my butt in gear. There's really no excuse.

Hey! Here I am, walking in with Starbucks, three years late. It blows my mind that it's been so long since I've posted anything, especially since I do come to dreamwidth regularly to check in with the people still here.

So let's talk about what I've been doing!

* In October 2020, I slipped on some wet grass going down a hill and broke all three bones in my ankle. For the first time in my life, I had an overnight stay in the hospital, because they had to operate on my ankle to get everything back in place. I'm mostly okay now, and I made my last payment on the medical visit this month!

* Work has been... interesting. When we last left off, they'd shut down for three weeks whil e we figured Covid out. Then we reopened, they made me the greeter in charge of counting customers and maintaining a customer limit in the store. I live in Arkansas, so you can imagine the amount of anti-mask sentiment I had to deal with. As of right now, I'm fully vaxxed and one of three associates at the store still wearing masks. I got Covid for the first time last August--although it was mild, I'm not looking forward to getting it again. In more recent news, I'm a coordinator again, and they've placed me solely in charge of training, which I do enjoy. I'm taking it as a win.

* In an attempt to force myself to write more original fiction, I've had a website and a pseudonym set up. It's here, if you want to look around. Paying for a website hasn't encouraged me to actually write all that much, but I think it's a good investment.

* My dad is still a fervent concert-goer, which means I am too. I enjoy them well enough, but sometimes I wish he'd just let me vegetate for a little while. We had two concerts back to back in both March and April, but he wouldn't believe me if I said I needed a break from the fun!

* I haven't been officially diagnosed, but I've become increasingly positive that I'm autistic... which explains SO MUCH. Also, since I'm actively trying to stop masking, I've realized how much effort it takes to pretend to be neurotypical.

* In fandom news, I'm still actively writing coldflash, although I've been slowing down. There's no other media that's hooked me in the fiction sense, so I guess I'll just ride this out until it's over. (I haven't been watching The Flash since season 4. I feel like a bad fan.)

* I'm going to actively try to pop in here more often. I've been thinking about why I've avoided DW for so long, and I think it's equal parts of 'I don't have anything to talk about' and 'I'm on group chat with my friends so anything that seems important gets told to everyone I know immediately.' I think if I treat this more as a journal than as something more performative, I'll feel more comfortable writing about myself and my feelings.

* I love bullet point format, btw. It's so easy to change subjects this way!

I want to talk about some good stuff, so here's a list in no particular order:

* [personal profile] dungeonmarm recently got a corn snake named Linda. She's very pretty, but very new and very shy. When I was younger, I was terrified of snakes, but she's a tiny noodle and I am a human adult, so I think I can handle it. However, while we were at Petco to get her a few things, I discovered a lovely betta fish and impulsively chose to bring him home. We are now a four pet household.

* A few weeks ago, we bought a bird feeder, because we've apparently turned into that kind of household. I've taken to sweeping the seeds dropped on our patio out beneath the fence in front of our apartment, and little sunflower sprouts have started to peek out of the dirt. It's charming to see them grow.

* Work has me at home until at least April 11th. I feel like I'm getting a taste of retirement, and I will be very bitter when I have to go back. On the other hand, I'm also super appreciative. TJ Maxx is treating their workforce really well in comparison to a lot of other places.

* I'm trying to get back into writing for Camp Nanowrimo after so many months without a steady writing habit. Sometimes I forget how much I enjoy writing because I have stress and guilt over not putting out the next chapter of my WIPs. Oh well, I'm sure every writer has that guilt.

* On Sunday my rl friends and I are going to do a Session Zero of Vampire the Masquerade. I'm not entirely a fan of DM'ing, but for some reason I really like playing around with different rule sets and game settings. I'll worry about what I'm going to do for our game after the session zero.

* On the D&D front, my character Kauthiel died in our last session. I"m okay with it now, but wow, there was so much crying from everyone. It was the saddest freaking thing. DDD: RIP Kauthiel, we love you.

Hi, everyone! It's been a brain fog few months. I've been doing things and watching things (Star Trek: Picard, The Witcher, Vampire the Masquerade: LA by Night, for instance), but nothing has been particularly interesting. With the added Covid-19 anxiety, I've been wondering if I should talk to my nurse practitioner at the earliest convenience and see if I need to make a medication adjustment.

My dad and I had the opportunity to see a concert with The Four Tops and The Temptations—they're both down to one original member each, but it was still magical to see how much they enjoyed being on stage. We were supposed to see Cher, but that got postponed until September. Hopefully this mess will be over by then, but I'm not holding my breath.

My work has been shut down for the last week, and we're closed for sure until April 4th. They are paying us for the time we're closed, but we'll know more about how we're going to proceed after this week.

I guess I just wanted to let everyone know I was doing okay. My to-read book pile hasn't decreased, unfortunately. It keeps staring at me. >.>

I left off doing the rest of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompts because they weren't things I was particularly interested in doing, so let's talk about what I have done!

Mostly work, NGL. But on Sunday, [personal profile] scheherezhad, [personal profile] dungeonmarm and I went to the Arkansas Skatium in Little Rock, and they took me ice skating for the first time! I've always wanted to try ice skating, but it was just something that never happened. The Skatium had both an ice rink and a roller rink, so after we got tired of the ice (not me, although I did break away because of my tired friends ♥) we did a few rings around on roller skates. I had a total blast. I always remembered that I'd liked roller skating when I was a kid, and I'm pleased to know it still holds up.

I've also submitted my short story that I wrote in class to a literary journal, but they don't allow simultaneous submissions, so I've got to wait and see if they accept my story before I can shop it out anywhere else. I'm fully prepared to be refused--I'm ready for my wall of rejection letters!

I did promise earlier that I would go into more detail about what I did this year, and the biggest thing was that I reapplied to the University of Central Arkansas, and was accepted! So I spent a semester going part-time in two classes: Introduction to African/African American Studies, and Forms of Fiction. I had an absolute blast and passed both of them with A's, so the academic probation I've been carrying with me since 2003 is officially no more! Unfortunately, due to my failed class hours from back in 2001 when I was a freshman college person, my financial aid is revoked until I rebalance my hours (according to the financial aid advisor, if I pass two more classes with an A, I should be fine.)

That also means I spent way too much money on my credit card to pay for my classes. You think I'd've learned better by now, right? /o\

Other than that, my friends and I are trying to play Dungeons & Dragons somewhat regularly, and so every bit of brain power I have that isn't going into work or chores is going into planning our sessions. How do people do this adulting thing again? I barely feel like I'm firing on all cylinders.

I hope everyone's having a great week! I've missed being on dreamwidth!

I was trying to figure out what I did yesterday, because it gets dark so early now that it messes up my concept of how late it is, and I realized that I spent the entire day after work listening to podcasts. I've already been listening to My Favorite Murder and The Magnus Archives, but I have recently been listening to Small Town Dicks. I'm always a fan of true crime, and this podcast has detectives talking about cases they were personally involved in. So interesting!

On Sunday, [personal profile] dungeonmarm, [personal profile] scheherezhad and I went to Little Rock and spent the day at the Outlet Mall. I bought a bunch of books that I didn't need and probably spent way too much money. We did have dinner at Star of India which was so good. I think it's safe to say that Indian food is one hundred percent my favorite.

It's grown cold and wet--we had some sleet earlier, but it's a little too warm to become snow or ice. Everything this week has been pretty chill and quiet. [personal profile] dungeonmarm works until 11pm, and I have to be up at 6am every day this week, so our schedules are... perpendicular? I have managed to do some dishes and get my laundry hung up, so I'm going to say today's been successful.

Snowflake Challenge #10

In your own space, talk About A Creator/Someone Who Inspired You. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My social circle is generally pretty small, but I've got a couple of people who are really inspiring to me. One of them is my co-writer [personal profile] saekhwa: we've written together since 8th grade (25 years now? OMG) and she's always willing to look at canon from a darker perspective. Her writing is always full of imagery and metaphor, and she's always given her time to help make other writers' work better.

The other I want to give a shout out to is [personal profile] omens. Even though she thinks she's lazy, she makes an effort to write every day. That determination and consistency is super inspiring!

Snowflake Challenge #9

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I saw this challenge, and my brain immediately blue-screened. Okay, canons I adore? Not quite the same thing as canons I write for.

The Flash. Honestly, it's kind of dumb and has so much pseudo science and bad plotting and you just have to kind of go with it. If you're interested in the coldflash aspect, you really only have to search out the 'Rogue' episodes. (For real. In the first season, for example, 1x04 Going Rogue, 1x10 Revenge of the Rogues, 1x16 Rogue Time, 1x22 Revenge of the Rogues—all Captain Cold Episodes. And I can't forget my favorite episode, 2x03 Family of Rogues.) If you're not there for the coldflash, the first season is really solid, although it's hit or miss from S3 onward.

Kyo Kara Maoh. This is marketed as a harem comedy, about a normal Japanese teenager who loves baseball. He gets flushed down the toilet (yes) and discovers a different world where he is the Demon King. The harem is all guys. There's nothing explicitly BL, but he does get engaged to a guy in the second episode and everyone's in love with him. Find it, if you can! It's by turns touching and funny and cringey and majestic.

NBC's Hannibal. If you like dark and fucked up stories, this is up your alley. Serial killing, cannibalization, manipulation, this one has it all. Single-handedly started my obsession with Mads Mikkelson. So good, even though it likes to pat itself on the back sometimes.

Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. This is such a great reboot of the original She-Ra. Everyone is diverse and the stakes are emotional and the canon has given me everything I want so far. A+, go watch it.

Snowflake Challenge #8

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. Undeclared by [personal profile] scheherezhad. This is D&D fic, and I'm SO DELIGHTED she's writing fic about our campaign, you have no idea.

2. Made it on the Sixth Day by [personal profile] saekhwa. The Gifted, Clarice/Sonya. What a great fix it fic for a big problem I had with the first season. Lyrical and emotional.

3. those three words over even I love you by [archiveofourown.org profile] qlala. Still one of my favorite coldflash fics. It's related to my favorite episode, the emotions are wrenching, and the porn is hot. This is the one I re-read the most when I need to remember I love my OTP, I think.

OMG guys, I'm caught up on snowflake! Wooooo! \o/

Ugh, this is always my least favorite thing. So here's three personal things and three fandom recs

1. I'm kind
2. I'm generous
3. I'm a pretty good baker

1. Call It What You Want (The Flash; Barry Allen/Leonard Snart)
2. New Homes (The Flash; Barry Allen/Leonard Snart)
3. Break-Up of the Ice (The Flash; Barry Allen/Leonard Snart)

Snowflake Challenge #6

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Sometimes I feel like the challenges are longer than my answers! Here's a brief wishlist of things off the top of my head.

1. Fanart for The Break-up of the Ice. I think I had this on my list last year, too. This was my first Coldflash fic, and it's still one of the ones I'm proudest of. I still yearn for someone to be inspired by it.

2. Commissions for original writing! I did a commision post on tumblr, which had the amount of traction you might suspect. I won't do commissions for fanfic because I'm old-school that way, but hit me up if you want any queer genre fiction!

3. Recs for original writing comms. Since I'm trying to refocus my attention onto my original fiction, if anyone has any suggestions for writing communities or publishing contacts, etc, let me know.

4. I love interesting historical facts. Tell me everything you know!

5. Music! What's everyone listening to right now, and why? :D

Snowflake Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Lists! I'm good at lists!

1. Write on Dreamwidth at least once a week. I've fallen into the idea that my life is boring and I have nothing to say, but that can't be entirely true. Even if I just post about games I've played on my phone, that still counts, right?

2. Keep a list of books I read this year. I went back to college for a semester (that's an entry all on its own!) and rediscovered my love for reading things that aren't fic. It would be cool to track how many books I read and my thoughts on them.

3. Try to game consistently. I started a gaming YouTube channel for my friends who don't have access to my console/PC games, and I managed exactly half-an-hour of play on the channel before I stopped. I'm going to try to figure out Twitch and upload things more regularly.

4. Shop original work to publishers. I have officially written original fiction, and I should at least attempt to be published, right? So now comes the arduous task of shopping for short story venues and dusting off my unpublished poetry. Ugh.

5. Become more active in the general writing community. I've reached the point where I'm finally ready for my wall of rejection letters, so I really want to reach out to the original writing community and start making my own connections. We'll see how long that lasts. ^^;

Here's where I confess I haven't been involved in any fests or communities for a really long time, so the only thing I can offer is [community profile] poetry_fiction: an annual challenge where we use poetry to inspire prose. We're doing a retrospective of our previous poets this year!

Snowflake Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As I mentioned in my intro post, I've been around fandom for quite a while. I remember reading Ronin Warriors slash (does anyone else remember Mink's Archive?) But it wasn't until I watched Gundam Wing that I actually wrote my first fic.

I have a tendency to dabble in a fandom until I find one that triggers the writing bug. Harry Potter was my first serious fandom. I completely fell into Harry/Draco, and I made so many great friends. We all fell out of touch, the way fandom friends tend to do, but I still think about them a lot. I don't even know if any of them are in fandom anymore.

My next big fandom was in 2006, when I dove into Kyo Kara Maoh. Although now I'm surprised at how little I actually wrote for it, I was genuinely obsessed. Even now, I still have so much merchandise. Who purchased—not just one, but TWO—one-of-a-kind hand-painted animation cels from Anime Cellar a decade and a half ago? Yes. It was me.

My third, and currently my most prolific fandom, is CW's The Flash. Comic books have always been a part of my life, although I've always been more of an X-Men person. The Flash had the perfect storm for me: great characters, terrible plotting, and a lot of room to play. The Flash/Captain Cold is my current OTP fuel, and I have not stopped writing about these assholes since 2016.

I feel like I've been around for so much—I lived through webrings, Yahoo! mailing lists, the Livejournal Strikethrough, Fanlib, the birth of AO3, and the exodus and splintering of modern fandom. It's been a wild ride, for sure.

Snowflake Challenge #1

Where should I start? Last year, I had every intention of maintaining my dreamwidth and connecting with everyone I follow, and then I promptly fell off the face of the planet. Then I realized it was Snowflake Challenge Time, and I realized this was the perfect time to jump back into it.

So! The challenge for Day 1 is this: In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hi! I'm Rachel, and I'm known as [personal profile] lunesque or [archiveofourown.org profile] moriavis. I've been in fandom since 2001 as a creator, and even earlier as a consumer. I'm currently active in The Flash fandom (I'm still deep in coldflash, three years later.) I'm dipping my toe into Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and freaking love Catra. I have a sticky fic index post that is several months out of date. /o\

In my personal life, I am a white, cis-gender ace lesbian woman. I've been diagnosed with anxiety and depression (as so many people have) and while I'm functional and medicated, my depression mostly causes intense periods of time fog. Time is fake! What do you mean it's been eight months since I last posted??

I live in Arkansas, and am lucky enough to have the best RL friends in [personal profile] saekhwa, [personal profile] scheherezhad, and [personal profile] dungeonmarm. I have two cats: a gray tabby named Alex, and a Siamese named Jill. I have a functional apartment and a mostly functional roommate in [personal profile] dungeonmarm. ;)

I love supernatural horror films, Broadway musicals, and Dungeons & Dragons.

I can't really think of anything else to add, but I'm always available for questions if you want to know something more about me.

It's nice to meet everyone, new and old! ♥
