Work story time!

Right now, I'm teething really badly on my last wisdom tooth (I have Orajel and Excedrin, so the pain is manageable, but damn I'm tired of the entire left side of my face aching) so I was complaining to Co-worker K about it. The conversation pretty much went like this:



Me: I'm teething, and it sucks. I feel for screaming, teething babies because paaaain.

K: Teething? How old are you?

Me: I knoooow! I'm 31 and I'm teething on my last tooth, I thought it'd be over with by now!

K: You're lying.

Me: ???

K: You're lying! You have to be!

Me: About the teething, or the 31? Because I'm both.

K: ...I thought that, like, the oldest you were was 23.

Me: Oh, I get that a lot. Nope, I'm 31.

K: ...the youngest I thought you were...

Me: ...what?

K: I thought you were 16.

Me: o.O

I regularly have people who think I'm 23 or so, but 16, really? It's nice to know I can pass for half my age, though.

Hee! Maybe it's a fannish thing? I still remember going out to a concert a week before my 30th birthday and getting carded. They seriously refused to let me in until I could prove I was over 18.

(While the girl beside me, who I swear was like 19, got in without having to prove ID.)

it is SO WEIRD when people won't believe one's age, isn't it? I'm almost 36 and regularly am assumed to be my children's nanny because I apparently look too young to be their mother. (How old do these people think I am? My older child is only 4. There are a skillion teenagers out there with 4-year-olds. And I haven't been carded at a bar in AGES so I can't look THAT young.)
