I have finally finished the huge stack of comics that's been living on my coffee table for the last six? months (with the exception of Avengers: Children's Crusade, mostly because Dad hasn't gotten issues 2 and 3 yet) and I have this to say about X-Men: Schism:
Marvel, you made it easy for me. ETA: Okay, after going through a list of the characters, they might not have made it as easy for me as I'd hoped. ^^;
Just a quick rundown-- Cyclops has been trying to maintain good pr with themuggles humans, and a mutant named Quentin Quire shows up with like, a bomb or something. That's enough for every other country to be like, OH NOES WE NEED OUR SENTINELS. Because everything is made better by a mutant hunting robot, right? Suffice to say, there ends up being a Sentinel making its way to the mutant island, Utopia, and the only x-men -- ie, adults -- there are Wolverine and Cyclops.
So Cyclops enlists all the students to help.
And Wolverine, of all people, FREAKS THE HELL OUT and threatens to blow up the fucking island. So, Cyclops and Wolverine fight, as the Sentinel is basically WALKING UP TO THEM, and then the kids say screw it, and they all fight the robot until it's broken.
At that point, Wolverine gives a very civilized f-you to Cyclops and goes back to open another school at Weschester. That splits the X-men completely down the middle. So now, there are two teams.
Team 1 -- Cyclops. He believes that every mutant should be taught to defend themselves, because you never know when you're going to be attacked, and dude, there's less than 300 mutants left, so everyone counts.
Team 2 -- Wolverine. He believes the children should be children and not raised to fight like soldiers at all. They should go to school and learn how to control their powers, and let them make the choice to fight when they're all grown up.
So, after the dust has settled, there's two teams of X-men now. And Uncanny X-men looks like it's going to be my baby. I'm not going to give a full list of the characters, these are just my favorites, but!
Team Cyclops Team Wolverine
Cyclops♥ Frenzy
Emma♥ Husk♥
Magik♥ Chamber♥
Storm Dust♥
Jubilee♥ Blindfold
Moonstar♥ X-23

As you can see, most of my favorites are staying with Cyclops. Which makes me \o/
And that, such as it is, makes me curious.
dungeonmarm and I looked at the DC 75th Anniversary Postcard Set, and one of the covers featured was Infinite Crisis #7, ie The Death of Supergirl, and had this knee-jerk, nostalgic feeling toward that comic. When I was younger, that was the comic for me. I would pull it out whenever my dad would let me and I would cry every damn time. This issue, and X-men #303 (The Death of Illyana Rasputin) are my formative comics. They made me love the medium, and I feel like I carry a part of them around with me as a memory of how painful and meaningful a comic can be, even though they might have their bad times. When they're good, they're very good.
Do any of you have any moments like that? Can you tell me what comic made you a comics lover and why? I'd be interested in hearing about it.
