I LOVE COMICS, YO aka kick ass is my favorite adjective
HELLO, INTERNETS!
It's been forever since I posted, but I actually have an excuse this time. Not only am I a lazy bitch who lurks on her friends page every day, this week I have been SO SICK. Like, so sick I actually had to take off two days of work just so I could get my voice back. It was awful. I did appreciate the days off, but that's going to kill my paycheck. On the other hand, it did give me plenty of time to catch up on all of the comic books I've been neglecting, and that has thrown me into a comics frenzy.
First off, is anyone reading New Mutants? Because the new series is amazing. AND FINALLY, FINALLY my favorite character Magik is back, in a seriously awesome way.
How kick ass is she? She travels through time with the goal of 'saving' her teammates, manipulates events from page on DESTROYS THE ELDER DEMONS that have been an overhanging threat since blood stones were created from her soul, and then regains the missing pieces of her soul. Unapologetic and FIERCE and I LOVE HER SO MUCH.
I think I'm going to talk about her some more for the people who aren't fortunate enough to know who she is. She's Colossus' little sister, and was visiting him in New York when she was seven, and her power activated prematurely, sending her into Limbo. Of course, the X-men freak, because OH NO, PETER'S LITLE SISTER. She comes back a couple of hours later, now a teenager and SORCERESS SUPREME OF LIMBO AND HALF DEMON. SO COOL.
So she spends some time with the New Mutants, always struggling between the demonic part of herself and her own lost innocence, and she becomes BFF with Kitty Pride. Now, I don't actually care much for Kitty, but she has been growing on me recently. As long as Chris Claremont doesn't write her as his favorite Mary Sue, I'm good.
Anyway, all the x-men die, as they are wont to do, in the battle against the Adversary, and it's actually televised. So Illyana gets to see her brother die. And records it. And watches it over and over and over. And over. Eventually, she tries to take revenge on Forge, the only x-man who survived, and almost killed him. She was also almost taken over by her demonic urges.
Cue Inferno. The main plot of that is sketchy for me--basically, Scott's wife, Madeline Pryor became a demonic queen who was going to open a portal to Limbo, the realm that Illyana controls--when, you know, all the demons aren't trying to rise up against her--and Illyana became more and more demonic in her rage and sorrow. The X-men, having been brought back to life, as they are wont to do, and Peter spends all this time looking for Illyana. He finds her in her demonic form and she' so ashamed she decides the only thing that can possibly make this better is if she had died in Limbo, instead of becoming strong enough to survive and come back.
So she uses her mutant power, which is to control 'stepping discs' that teleport her through space, and often, time, using Limbo as a middleman, and tries to kill herself back when she was seven. The New Mutants protect little!Illyana and take her out of Limbo, which in the end means that Magik, the Darkchilde, never actually existed, since she was saved before she became Sorceress Supreme of Limbo.
Cue 1993, WHERE ILLYANA DIES. OF THE LEGACY VIRUS. And me crying and whining about it for the next 18 years. JESUS, I FEEL OLD.
She has technically been brought back twice. In Age of Apocalypse, where she was a little girl, and in House of M, where she was part of a Russian team of superheroes. And they finally, finally brought her back in the main universe, where she manipulated her entire team, Legion (the mentally disturbed son of Prof X who has a million different personalities that each have their own power) and Limbo to GET REVENGE. AND XI'AN IS THE ONLY ONE THAT KNOWS.
ETA: SOULSWORD. OMG. The sword that she created out of the remainder of her soul and only affects magical things, but never affects anything in the real world. Which totes means it kills demons. :D :D
I could totes get behind some Illyana/Xi'an stories, you know? And pictures, just 'cause I think she's hot.
Oh, okay, here's a couple of Xi'an, too. Who is awesome, and a POC and a canon lesbian. Who now has a mechanical leg. :D I'll tell more of her story if anyone is interested. <3
And while we're at it, some Dani Moonstar, too. Because have I mentioned that all the girls are pretty kick ass? She's the only one without powers on the team (due to M-day) AND SHE STILL KICKS ASS. She saves the day when her team tries to leave her behind to keep her safe, gets her arm broken, gets tortured in front of her teammates and is tough enough to tell them to stop freaking out because she was going to be fine, and then orchestrates her own escape, splints her broken arm, and kills her torturer by shooting an arrow into the lady's head, using her other arm and her foot to aim the bow. And she's a Valkyrie. Totes awesome, yeah?
And now, I want to talk about Scott Summers.
Okay, for the longest time, I didn't really like Scott that much. I admit it. I didn't really like him in the X-men movies, either, but that's because they made him someone entirely different. But after the storyline of The Twelve when he got possessed by Apocalypse and got an awesome personality transplant? I LOVE THAT MAN.
(Yeah, I know this is an old costume. Deal.)
And not only do I love him and his snarkiness, his ability to poke fun at his own stuffiness, and his willingness to do things that are NOT things X-men do (like set up a team of mutant hitmen for people too dangerous to live) I LOVE ALTERNATE VERSIONS.
Take the Age of Apocalypse, for example:
Dude, he's one of the fucking ELITE. And I don't even care that Wolverine was the one who took his eye over a misunderstanding about Jean. Because dude. He's that fucking awesome. If you guys haven't read the Age of Apocalypse, remind me to track it down and upload it, because I honestly believe it is one of THE X-stories to read, right along with the Dark Phoenix Saga and God Loves, Man Kills. Seriously.
But now. Now? Someone must really fucking love me. Because there's a brand new alterna-verse called the Age of X. (Don't ask me much about it, it's REALLY FUCKING BRAND NEW.) But oh. Scott Summers is known as Basilisk. *shiver*
His eyelids were cut off and he was used as a killing machine for death sentences in Alcatraz. His mask has a remote control that raises the ruby quartz that keeps his optic blasts at bay. AND HE'S SCOTT FUCKING SUMMERS, SO OF COURSE HE ESCAPES BRILLIANTLY. UNF.
