End of Year Wrap-up and looking to the future

It's late and I'm bored so I thought I would just chat about the previous year, including things I wanted to learn or do, and the books I read. I usually follow a set question list for this kind of thing, but I think I'll skip it this time.

Top books I read in 2025: For this I decided I would only include the top five, and only include books I first read in 2025. I reread a lot this year, but I stuck to books I really liked. Anyway, my favorite books of the year were:

1. The Secret Life of Addie LaRue. I really enjoyed the story and the writing in this book

2. Piranesi. Such an odd book, but really good.

3. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. Another V.E. Schwab book. Loved the weaving of different people's stories into one cohesive thing. And again, I enjoy her writing style.

4. The Song of Achilles. Such a good book! And it's a queer romance, which I appreciated. Good writing, I'll have to pick up Circe this upcoming year.

5. His Majesty's Dragon. Loved the story and the characters!

All in all, I read 28 books, including the rereads, and I'm actually reading a 29th right now. Might end up finishing it before the new year. My goal this year was to read 18 novels, and somewhere in the spring months, I stopped reading, so I really wasn't feeling too hopeful about meeting the goal. I'm pretty happy with 28 and thinking maybe I should up the number for next year's goal.

I was also toying with the idea of making 2026 the year of science fiction, partially because my advent calendar is all science fiction. We'll see. I might end up needing a break from it.

As for learning things, I didn't do so hot. I wanted to make headway in learning more about creative writing, but that fizzled out after awhile and now I just feel talentless and like there's no point in trying. Maybe I'll get my writing mojo back in 2026.

Speaking of 2026 and learning things, I want to try to learn how to code in Python. I've located a few resources to help. Also, a friend and I were discussing a "50 before 50" list. I have 25 things left on my list and only a year and two months left to complete it. The thing is, some of the items require a level of physical activity that I'm just not capable of anymore. Something is really, really wrong with my knees and I do not have money for physical therapy and, worst case scenario, I'm too heavy to be approved for a knee replacement. I'm not quite sure what to do, but walking is extremely difficult right now.

On the 5th Day of Christmas...

I ate all the rest of the Anthon Berg things last night, so we're done with that one. Whoops!

1. Redhead Creamery: North Fork Whiskey-washed Muenster and Microwaveable Pork Rinds. The cheese was really good, salty and creamy. I don't think I've ever had pork rinds before and they did indeed puff up in the microwave. I ate a few, but the taste wasn't sitting right with me somehow. I'm not sure why.

2. TheFictionPhantom: The Martian by Andy Weir. YES! I've been hoping for this one. Also hoping for Project Hail Mary, but we shall see. Value: $15.00. Total Value: $65.53.

On the 4th Day of Christmas

Greetings all!

1. Anthon Berg: Camus Cognac. You may have noticed I'm only doing one now. I got snacky a couple days ago and decided to take some of the extras for snacks, so we're down to one day at a time for these.

2. Redhead Creamery: Little Lucy Brie and it's pairing Double Truffle Hot Chocolate. I was skeptical, but I heated the brie up in the microwave and made the hot chocolate and, Oh MY GOD, it is SUCH a good pairing. I was glad we finally had another cheese besides cheddar, but to be honest, I wouldn't hate it if every single one of the rest of the days were exactly this. SO GOOD. I'll have to try this pairing again sometime.

3. TheFictionPhantom: The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance by H.G. Wells. This is the first book that hasn't been on my TBR list, so I'm not sure how I feel about it. Although, I have always wanted to read H.G. Wells. It's a really short book, I might read it later today. I hope more of the books came off my TBR list, but I'm not hopeful. There are a lot of small books in the box and I don't think anything on my TBR was small, except for the Murderbot books. We shall see! Value: $5.95. Total Value: $50.53.

I'm alive! And have watched two (2) TV shows!

Heated Rivalry S1: I feel somewhat ambiguous about this. On the one hand, I totally get the hype – it's live action gay romance that's both smutty, mildly kinky and also emotional, which is a combination that mainstream TV rarely offers. And, regardless of whether it's actually fanfic with its serial numbers filed off or not, it feels very fanfic-cy, so naturally it appeals to the fandom audience. And I'm very much part of that, so I did enjoy it. The sex scenes were super hot, and I liked the feels!

Having said that, for something that's supposedly enemies/rivals-to-lovers, the rivals part feels very unsatisfying to me. We don't see them being at each other's throats (even figuratively speaking) for any significant amount of time before they hook up, which is what I need for the trope to actually feel rewarding. And I don't enjoy established relationship stories, so my interest peaked in episode one and two and then dramatically dropped. It was revived briefly at the very end of the season because I like 'people find out' stories, but I don't really see the show holding my attention through further seasons.

On a shallow note, I find the protagonists painfully unattractive, Ilya in particular, and not interesting enough to make up for it. My favorite episode was Scott's episode because François Arnaud has more sex appeal in a single lock of his hair than the other male cast combined (serious, how has he got even hotter since The Borgias?! it's extremely unfair!), and also because Scott just appeals more to me as a character. I could take or leave Kip, but the coffee shop romance was very cute.

Overall, this sounds more negative than I felt watching the show. I had fun, I was entertained, but I wasn't as into it or fannish about it as I would have liked to be.

Mozart/Mozart S1: This got terrible reviews – a big magazine dubbed it the worst TV show ever, which made me think the reviewer hasn't watched many TV shows. Mozart/Mozart is… fine. It's the typical faux-history drama that prioritizes drama over historical accuracy. It doesn't pretend otherwise – it even says so in the opening credits – and IMO if that's not your thing, you should probably steer clear of it, rather than say "oh no, this show does what it's set out to do, but I don't like that genre, so it's bad" – that's like watching splatter horror and complaining about gore.

It was fun, the acting was good, Maria Anna is a likable protagonist, her brother is a troubled genius who annoyed me at times but ultimately got his shit mostly together, and the show is doing a good job as showing them both as victims of their circumstances. I really liked the ambiguity of both Leopold's portrayal, who loves his kids but in his attempt to do what's best alienates them, as well as Marie Antoinette's – she's wasteful and decadent and scheming, but also vulnerable and trying to escape a terrible situation. And I was very very much into Maria Anna's and Salieri's storyline – now that's an enemies-to-lovers romance for me to sink my teeth in with them genuinely working against each other despite their attraction, and so much betrayal and misunderstandings. Salieri is super hot too, and blorbo material! I really felt for him, because everyone was pulling him in different directions. And he did come through for Maria Anna at the end! I have lots of feelings about him and them as a ship. ♥

The one thing I didn't like was the weird infusion of modern electro-pop during some (but not all? and there was no pattern for when it would happen?) of the performances, which seemed really unnecessary and felt jarring.

Considering its negative reception, I highly doubt that we'll get a second season, which I'm somewhat sad about, but at least it ended in a mostly good place.

On the 3rd Day of Christmas...

...my true love gave to me:

1. Anthon Berg: Mount Bay Barbados Rum

2. Redhead Creamery: Garlic Cheddar and it's pairing, Rosemary & Oregano marinated Asparagus. This time I let the cheese come to room temperature before eating like it says on the package. The asparagus with the cheese was good, but not my favorite. Hoping for a jam or another sausage tomorrow

3. TheFictionPhantom: The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard. I was a tiny bit disappointed in this one, only because I forgot to tell her I already owned the ebook. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it. It was on my TBR list still, even though I'd bought it already. Value: $27.99. Total Value: $44.58

All in all, it was a good day!

Merry Christmas!

Belatedly! And Happy Thursday for those who don't celebrate! It was a quiet, lovely day for [personal profile] cypher and me. We broke open the Heroes' Feast DnD cookbook. Will made Amphail Braised Beef and some delicious saffron bread called St. Lucia Buns (they got the recipe from a Scandinavian friend on tumblr). For sides I made Otik's Skillet-Fried Spiced Potatoes, Quith-Pa (an Elven recipe containing apricots and almonds; the original called for coconut but Will's allergic so I subbed in the almonds), and Wood Elf Forest Salad.

We exchanged gifts, which can be summed up as Warhammer + art supplies (for me) and Warhammer + video games (for Will). As always, I wish I could have done more, but they assured me I did enough. I just want to get them all the nice things. ;3;

I finished my assignment for [community profile] eatdrinkmakemerry and for [tumblr.com profile] secretsanguinala and am now working on a gift and a pinch hit for the latter. I don't know what came over me — possibly having a steady job (good, security!) + the state of the world (extremely bad) is combining in a way that's making my brain look for fun productivity — but I'm having a ton of fun working on fandom stuff. :D It probably also helps that I'm working on mostly crack ships and AUs. Also, wrt Secret Sanguinala, it's my fandom's holiday exchange! I want it to be successful and full! Reveals were late Christmas Eve so this last gift is gonna be a little late, but that's okay.

(I drew ABO porn for the first time! what the heck!)

I both love and hate that Steam has a yearly replay similar to Spotify's Wrapped. I love it because, I mean, I'm very sentimental and I love looking back on the year! But I hate it because it's such a magnifying glass on how bad I am at staying on task in games, lmao. Oh well. I'm hoping 2026 is a kinder year in all ways and I'll be able to focus better on hobby things.

........I usually do a little look back on the year but frankly, 2025 SUCKED and I don't want to. It was just a shitty, disheartening, scary year and I understand that there is a lot of privilege to being able to be like, nope, not gonna focus on all that scary stuff, but damn it! I'm tired of focusing on the scary stuff! It's ALL bad! Even news about video games is bad (Larian employees making fun of the gender stuff in BG3, Larian using AI for the character design in Divinity, etc) and it's just. All bad. So I'm looking forward to the future and the things I can control.

Speaking of which, I bought a fancy hardback planner for this year!

The gold is shiny and I'm using different colored pens to help try and keep me on track. As someone notorious for NOT staying on track on goals....I hope I can stick with this, lmao.

Book Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea

Greetings all, just popping in again for another book review!

TITLE: The House in the Cerulean Sea
Author: T.J. Klune
Genre: Cozy fantasy, Young Adult

Characters: 7/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Writing style: 8/10
Plot: 6/10
Intrigue: 7/10
Logic/Relationships 8/10
Enjoyment: 8/10

7.28= 4 Stars

General Thoughts: It was definitely cozy, heart-warming, and quirky in all the right ways. I enjoyed the writing style and the relationships the main character had with the other characters in the book. I think this might be a series, so I'll have to pick up the second book this upcoming year.

2nd Day of Christmas

Greetings all!

1. Anthon Berg Liquor-filled chocolate bottles: Cointreau and Luxardo Maraschino Cherry. The cherry was extremely good. I love Luxardo maraschino cherries!

2. Redhead Creamery: Margie Clothbound Cheddar and it's pairing, 2oz of Saucisson Sec (basically a cured sausage). Both made a very tasty treat!

3. The FictionPhantom: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Value: $7.99. Total Value: $16.59. I don't remember if I said before, but I selected Science Fiction for all my choices this time. It's interesting to see what she picked off my TBR list. This novel has been one I've wanted to read for years, but never picked up before. Can't wait to get to it!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make myself another 7 and 7 cocktail and try to ignore my throbbing knees!

First Day of Christmas!

Merry Christmas, everyone! Today starts the 12 days of Christmas, which means we switch over to my book advent calendar, the Anthon Berg liquor filled chocolates calendar, and the Redhead Creamery cheese and pairing calendar. We also have the last day of the dice calendar and the inkvent calendar. Let's get to it!

1. Gaming Dice: A heavy, metal 20-sided die in green with gold accents

2. Diamine Inkvent: A Shimmer + Sheen ink called Myrrh the Merrier. OMG, this is a gorgeous ink. The base color is dark teal, the sheen is metallic purple, and the shimmer is blue sparkles. SO COOL! And it's a large bottle!

3. Anthon Berg: I'm opening two days since it's a 24 day calendar. I got Southern Comfort and Cuarenta Y Tres, which is a Spanish liquor.

4. Redhead Creamery: Lucky Linda Clothbound Cheddear & a small jar of balsamic fig pearls (basically boba pearls in balsamic) It was a pretty good combo, although both were EXTREMELY strong tasting

5. TheFictionPhantom (this is the etsy shop I got the book calendar from): Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. Excellent! I love Butler's writing, so I can't wait to read this. It's been on my TBR for quite a while. Value: $8.60.

Sorry about this, but the only way to get everything in the picture was to do it sideways and I have no idea how to change that after the fact.

Advent Day 24

We have reached the end of the Cult Pens and Cacao & Cardamom calendars. There's still another day left of the dice and ink ones, but those will be included in the First Day of Christmas post tomorrow. So, it's the end of Advent season! Let's get to it!

1. Gaming Dice: A clear, apple-green 12-sided die with red numbers. There's also some red and green sparkles in it.

2. Diamine Inkvent: A pigment type of ink called Antler. It's a soft brown color

3. Cult Pens: Platinum Procyon Fountain Pen in turquoise. Cost: $84.00. Total Cost: $207.86. Well, with tax, shipping from the UK, and tariffs, I paid a little over $166 for this calendar. As you can see, I'm still getting value for money, but this year's calendar didn't excite me as much as last year's. I'm on the fence about getting it next year.

4. Cacao & Cardamom: a S'mores Knafeh Cup. To be honest, I was slightly disappointed when I saw what it was, but OMG, it was SOOOOOO good. I'd like a whole box of these! Great end to the calendar. I think I liked last year's better, but I'm glad I was able to get one last minute.

Advent Day 23

One more day! Early today since I have errands to run. (Everyone cross your fingers that my car starts!)

1. Gaming Dice: Today was a percentage die which was half cloudy green and half transparent green with a few sparkles thrown in

2. Diamine Inkvent: A Chameleon ink called "Let it Snow" which is blue and sparkly

3. Cult Pens: Platinum Ink Cartridges, 2 pack. Kinda disappointing. I was hoping for a Diamine special edition. Also, since it's actual ink cartridges, that might mean the pen tomorrow might not have the ability to be filled from ink pots, which will be sad. I have so many to try, now! Anyway, Cost: $2.27. Total Cost: $123.86

4. Cacao & Cardamom: A couple of peppermint meltaways. They were very, very good!

Advent Day 22

Let's get to it!

1. Gaming Dice: A silver metal 8-sided die. It's really cool looking

2. Diamine Inkvent: Pigment Chameleon called Pineapple Spritz. Basically gold with a hint of sparkle

3. Cult Pens: No link today as I couldn't find the exact one. It's an Iwako puzzle eraser in the shape of a sleigh. As far as I can tell, it costs: $2.77. Total Cost: $121.59. If I'm right, tomorrow will be a special edition ink and the day after will be a really nice fountain pen.

4. Cacao & Cardamom: Texas Pecan Praline. Should be pretty good!

I can't believe there's only two days left!

Advent Day 21

Early today

1. Gaming Dice: It's an 8-sided die and it's a very, very, very dark amber red. So dark it's almost black, with a layer of blue sparkles on top. Pretty cool

2. Diamine Inkvent: Extreme Sheen called Chaos. This one is pretty neat. The base color is dark plum, but when you shine a light on it, the sheen is bright, metallic, acid green. So cool!

3. Cult Pens: Midori MD notebook light A7 Basically it's three mini notebooks. Cost: $9.44. Total Cost: $118.82

4. Cacao & Cardamom: White chocolate covered baklava. Pretty good!
