(no subject)

Today was a long, hard day of work. I hate being in a shift that's obviously understaffed, because it makes even normal days far busier and more stressful. I daydream of getting out of retail, but I'm limited by my refusal to drive. It would be different if we lived in a city with some sort of public transportation, but alas.

Anyway, I don't have much to talk about today, because work wiped me out, so I'm going to look at another question.

!!! Okay, I stopped my entry to put my laundry in the washer, and let me tell you this story! So, [personal profile] dungeonmarm did a load of laundry and was like, our rug is wet. (We have a rug that sits between our washer and dryer, in the little laundry nook. And I was like, IDK, I haven't done laundry in three weeks. (Don't judge me.) HOWEVER. WHILE I WAS PUTTING IN MY SECOND LOAD OF LAUNDRY. Something hot dripped on me, and I was like, wtf what is this? and I looked up at the light, and sure enough, there was water dripping down the glass of the light cover and dripping right onto the rug, where I was standing. I need to put in a maintenance request for my bathroom light, anyway, but I guess I should tell them about the dripping in our laundry room, too. HOW WEIRD.

Anyway, back to fun prompt questions:

your writing process- plot first and then start writing or writing and seeing where it goes?

Okay, writing process questions are always super interesting to me.

I really fluctuate on this--my most successful (and by successful, I mean actually completed) stories all start with an image or a scene. If it's for a fic, I go, How did these characters get here? What's so important about this scene? If it's something original, I always start with characters first. I'll write a scene to get a feel for them, and if Im lucky, a story will follow. Then I'll spend time plotting out things really, really loosely. I do my best when I really spend time on an outline and break each chapter down into scenes, because if I end up getting stuck, it's way easier to get back on track if I know the exact scene that's following after the one I'm struggling with.

This totally explains my bang, by the way. That started out as a tumblr prompt from months ago, and I have one very particular scene in mind. The cast of characters has changed at least twice now, and the entire middle section of the fic has gone through an overhaul.

My (few) stories always start out with a scene or an image, as well. Or a quote, sometimes. But mostly it only leads to writing snippets or missing link type fics, nothing long and plotty.

On another note, I finished watching The Flash yesterday. Yeah, I'm all caught up with that one now. But holy shit! Way to mix everything up again! I wonder what will happen now, how much will stay the same, how much will change.

Back in 2006 I took part in a HP winter challenge/exchange, because of a one word prompt: "ornament" - I immediately had an idea for it. Never happened again afterwards, though. But this fic is still the one people seem to love the most.

Flashpoint? Do you mean Flash POV? Or is this something about comics canon I have no idea about?

Yes, you should definitely get maintenance to look into that!

I am always leery of water and electricity mixing, for obvious reasons.

Interesting! I am mostly the same way. I get a nugget of a scene or hook, and then build up the story around that. Sometimes it is in the beginning, and sometimes it is end or middle, but the story still grows from that initial hook.
