The word onanism came from the bible. Onan was punished for spilling his seed, which he did via coitus interruptus, but the idea was generalized in the victorian era when our lovely puritanical forefathers were looking for an excuse to forbid masturbation. So really onanism is any non-reproductive male orgasm.
