*coughs*

Um. Yeah.

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] scheherezhad, for cleaning up my writing. God, I didn't know it could die that much in a couple of months...

Pairing: Draco/Blaise

Rating: G

Summary: Draco's looking for excuses

Draco Malfoy decides on the night of the Halloween Ball that he hates Seamus Finnigan.

He does this in his normal way--fast as quicksilver, passionately, with the same all-consuming fire of everything else he despises: Harry Potter, Millicent Bulstrode's cat, the color puce. He figures he's done Finnigan an honor, really, relegating him to the higher stratosphere of his negative emotions.

Then he realizes that he doesn’t want to give Finnigan any sort of honor at all, and he forcefully demotes him into the category of Severe Dislike.

When he looks across the room again, Seamus is touching Blaise, and Blaise is laughing.

Draco can’t help but hate Finnigan more.

*

It’s not as though Draco makes a habit of showing his concern for his friends, he thinks. As a Malfoy, it simply is not appropriate to show anything but cool disdain. So when he decides to have a Talk with Blaise for Blaise’s own good, he’s a little miffed that Blaise doesn’t seem to take his advice or his concern very seriously.

Draco thinks he is very cunning when he compares the half-blooded Finnigan to a bruised apple, and he expects Blaise to see the effort he’s putting forth and agree accordingly.

Blaise says he has always eaten around the bruise.

All Draco knows is that if you play too long in the mud, you’re bound to get filthy as well.

*

Blaise has always thought that Draco (perhaps not so surprisingly) was very childish, very selfish.

Sometimes, just to see what happens, Blaise reads his book in the common room, flung carelessly over one of the green armchairs, fingers itching for a cigarette. He positions himself so that he can see Draco over the edge of his book, and is amused when Draco looks at him seven times in three minutes.

He raises his eyes to acknowledge Draco on the tenth glance and arches an eyebrow. Draco turns pink, glowers, and turns away. He doesn’t look back.

The good thing about having a best friend, Blaise thinks, is that sometimes, you know him better than he knows himself.

Seamus Finnigan isn’t the reason that they’re fighting.

He’s only the excuse.
