Our Goodbye -- A Poem
This was our goodbye:
my hands wrapped around a mug of chai,
the telephone so silent it screamed.
My heart ached with a cold
that never seemed to thaw.
This was our goodbye:
the way laughter rang false from your throat;
bitter and ageless from a diet of lies.
You laughed until your voice broke,
and ran inward at the quiet.
This is our goodbye:
the way your hands felt against my face,
the way I watched you from the top of the stairs.
My hands were hidden by the edges of my sweater;
tears littered my fingers like papercuts.
This is our goodbye:
remembering how you once said you would never go--
now, as the lights go out one by one;
now, as you close the door
and lock my universe behind you as you leave.
my hands wrapped around a mug of chai,
the telephone so silent it screamed.
My heart ached with a cold
that never seemed to thaw.
This was our goodbye:
the way laughter rang false from your throat;
bitter and ageless from a diet of lies.
You laughed until your voice broke,
and ran inward at the quiet.
This is our goodbye:
the way your hands felt against my face,
the way I watched you from the top of the stairs.
My hands were hidden by the edges of my sweater;
tears littered my fingers like papercuts.
This is our goodbye:
remembering how you once said you would never go--
now, as the lights go out one by one;
now, as you close the door
and lock my universe behind you as you leave.
