Where I poke my head out of the ground and comment on important stuff
I heard a joke this weekend; a comedian was talking about homosexuals, and said:
“I have nothing against homosexuals—all I know is when I put batteries in my flashlight the wrong way, it doesn’t work.”
At first, I was just mildly amused, because it’s just. Yeah, whatever, funny ha ha. But the more I think about it, the more offended I get. I mean, equating human beings with a flashlight is totally dehumanizing. It takes things like feelings and thinking and emotion and desire (all of the things that supposedly make us the dominant race of being on the planet) and turns us into animals, who all simply live on instinct.
In my opinion (and yes, I realize it’s an opinion and everyone has one) there is nothing wrong with homosexuality. For some people, it’s just right. For others, it’s not. Get over it. And for those who say it’s completely against God and nature, I’d like to point out that, first, religion in itself, as a whole, is a cultural, man-made structure. (I’ll save religion rant for another day)—and as for nature, animals participate in homosexual activities as well. Believe me, after accidentally walking on two male cats fucking each other in my Aunt’s laundry room, I will never doubt that. And since animals have no complicated feelings or thoughts, then they must have been going by instinct. (Of course, one could always argue that animals don’t have souls and humans do, and therefore open the door on the nature of good and evil, what one sees as good and evil, and the human ability of free will to make their own choices for good or ill—but perhaps I’m simply making it too complicated.)
While homosexuality itself isn’t beneficial for the continuation of the life of any species, it is in no way unnatural.
As for my two cents regarding gay marriage (come on, we all knew that was coming) I have only this to say:
I understand where a lot of people are coming from, as marriage was first and foremost a religious institution, and most religions do forbid homosexuality. However, it is my personal belief that marriage as an ideal in itself has evolved beyond the power of that particular barrier. Instead of using homosexuality as a scapegoat for the way heterosexual marriage has been disintegrating, heterosexuals need to look at themselves and what they’re doing, and how they are contributing to their own problems. They are as responsible for their marriages as anyone else is (more so, I think), and one can’t solve the problem if one denies their own culpability.
