I've sort of missed livejournal, now that I think about it. I miss writing about anything with actual substance. But I can never seem to find the time, or the words, or the motivation, or something. So here's me trying to get in the habit of LJ again-- of jotting a note every day, or sorting out my thoughts in some sort of order. Maybe letting my muses to continue to amuse my flist the way they amuse me, or--god, sharing my dad's antics that are driving me batty.
I think I'll do that one.
So, that twelve year old fandom newbie, the one that has the OTP of love FOREVER AND EVER, that never stops talking about the anime/professionally translated manga/scanlations/random pictures on the internet? The newbie that won't stop talking about characterization or waxing meta on a show when you're obviously not into it and weeping with boredom every time you have to hear, just that once more, how perfect Character A and Character B are together, or why Plot Twist A was fantastic (when really, anyone with a brain could see it coming a mile away?)
And spends 90% of your conversations talking about the fandom?
And then repeats everything they said last time you had a conversation until you want to bang your head against a wall just to make it stop?
THAT IS MY DAD.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm proud that my dad has found something that he likes. I'm thrilled that he finally gets what Harry Potter or Kyo Kara Maoh or Stargate Atlantis or Supernatural have felt like for me.
What I don't like is how he goes about it.
I admit that I talk a lot about fandom. That sometimes my fandom is the only topic of conversation that I feel like discussing. But if I'm speaking to someone and they seem disinterested or want to speak about something else, then I do my damndest to find another topic, or to rein in my enthusiasm, or attempt to showcase my striking pseudo-intellectualism.
I don't shove material at people that they could less care about. I don't force people to absorb more of it than they want to, and I don't get upset if someone I introduce the show/book/comic/whatever to doesn't happen to like the program as much as I do.
My dad is a twelve year old fandom newbie, and all I can do is wait until he grows up.
If I don't kill him first.
I think I'll do that one.
