December Meme - Day 6

Whew! I almost missed today! There's ice everywhere, so what better than to drink hot chocolate and watch my Frozen bootleg again? (I may have a problem. D: )

[personal profile] dungeonmarm asked me: What smell strongly evokes a certain memory for you?

I don't think I have very many scent-related memories. Sandlewood and the Yves Saint Laurent Opium perfume are the closest ones I can think of, and they're both strongly related to my mother.

ETA:

I do have an Opium related memory, though.

When I was a lot younger, I had an allowance of $20 for doing chores around home, which didn't leave very much money for gift buying. I didn't even get my first job until I was 18. Anyway, one Christmas I didn't get my mother any gifts. That in and of itself wasn't a terrible thing, but it turned out that she didn't get a single personal gift. It was all sugar-free candies and chocolate. She cried. I felt so guilty that I immediately promised myself that I'd save up and buy her favorite perfume, which was Opium.

My mother had a tendency to shake gifts and make really good guesses as to what was in the wrapped boxes, and when I went over and gave her my wrapped present, she shook it and immediately guessed, and was completely surprised when she was right, and I promptly burst into tears, because I'd wanted it to be a complete surprise.

She felt so guilty about making me cry that she never shook another gift of mine again. It made it a lot easier to surprise her with gifts.
