Movie blather
Today, I want to talk about The Raven.
It's really a fairly pedestrian movie, if when I really think about it. John Cusack is an entertaining Poe, shouting and egotistical and crazy as all hell. My favorite character is played by Luke Evans, the AWESOMELY FANTASTIC Emmett Fields. Basically, this movie is about a serial killer who uses Poe's stories as his inspiration.
Now that the initial response and summary has occurred, it's time for squee.
THERE WERE SO MANY FUN THINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE. Poe has a raccoon! He's a terrible alcoholic! He's kind of crazy! I don't know if I like him, but he entertains me.
His girlfriend, Emily, is the one who inspired the poem "Anabel Lee", and she gets kidnapped by the serial killer. You know what? She's pretty kick ass, too. Yes, she gets kidnapped and buried alive, but then she rips her corset and takes out on of the the metal corset bars and tries to stab her kidnapper in the eye with it, and then manages to work her way out of the coffin and breaks the floor to get out. She's still a victim, but she's an awesome victim who fights back.
And then Emmett Fields, who was by far my favorite character. He's just my type, too. The cool, calm police officer hunting down the evil bad guy. He reminded me a lot of Arthur from Inception.
AND I SHIPPED THEM. I SHIPPED THEM SO HARD, LIKE, I DON'T EVEN. At first, I was like, I can't just ship the crazy writer and the inspector just because Poe is working on the serial killer case as a consultant and Fields keeps looking at him with dark concerned eyes, but then!
Poe's house gets burned down, and he shows up at Field's house with his raccoon and a handful of clothing, and they basically have a conversation like this.
Poe: My house burned down.
Fields: Yeah, I heard.
*they look at each other*
Fields: Oh, yeah, come on in.
and then they promptly start yelling at each other in a very small room, and I was gone.
This is basically a "What if?" story where Poe died of poison, and then FIELDS HUNTS DOWN HIS MURDERER AND KILLS HIM DEAD. I ship it so, so hard.
The only other thing that really bugged me was the POC thing. On one hand, No PoC's died, so that's okay, but on the other hand, there are NO POC's in the movie at all. And that sucks.
Has anyone else watched it? What do you think?
ETA: This entry isn't cross-posted. I don't know why it shows it is.
