Ugh...I'm all like, 'so many stories' so little time' *sigh* And then, I know people are waiting on my fics *loves everyone* And I'm still pissed at FF.net. *sighs* I loved getting reviews, too...*sniffle* Ah, well--Here's the next part of VPR. I don't like this chapter as much as the first one--in fact, I hate it with a passion. But oh well. ;)

ERG. It's the 15th, and I've edited this part--there's a couple of extra lines, and stuff...I rather like the slight changes better...at least now I don't hate it as passionately. :)

Draco took a deep breath, standing up and smoothing down his clothing as he stared at his school robes.

Fuck. He risked another glance at himself in the mirror. Double fuck.

“It worked-“ he murmured quietly to the mirror. “Bloody hell, it actually worked! Amazing!” He straightened with pride, grinning at his reflection. His smile looked strange on his young, pale face, and it faded away into contemplation as Draco ran his fingers through his hair.

Why was he so happy? This was very, very bad. Did he even dare mess with the timeline? Surely nothing would be worse than the place he had just come from. Would it? Draco slipped his robes on and went over to the vanity, arching his eyebrow at all of his hair-styling products. What the hell did I need all of this for? He wondered as he lifted up various articles and set them back down in disgust. He grabbed the brush again and ran it through his locks, parting it and lightly applying the least holding of his gels.

“I was a sick little prat, wasn’t I?” he said conversationally to his reflection, who arched an eyebrow and stared at him oddly before shrugging. ‘Yeah, but we’re a hot little prat.’ Draco stared at his reflection, puzzlement knitting his forehead. The spell wasn't supposed to take him back this far--what was he supposed to do? How could he stop his future from happening? He couldn't even remember how he acted when he was sixteen. All right. He shook his head, straightened his shoulders, and stepped out of his room, sighing as his eyes traveled over the stone walls of the dungeons. A damp chill breezed through him… this was beautiful, this was a memory he never thought he’d ever know again.

“Draco?”

“Yes, Vincent?”

“Why’re you looking so happy?”

“Why not? We’re here, in the *dungeons*!” Draco couldn’t stop a small grin from appearing on his lips.

“Uh... yeah…?” Crabbe and Goyle stared hard at him, patiently waiting for the punchline.

Draco sighed. “Never mind. Now, how can I help you on ...Transfigurations?”

Harry yawned hugely as he and Ron made their way down to the commons to meet up with Hermione before breakfast.

“If I didn’t like breakfast so much, there’d be no way I could get up this early,” Ron grumbled, stretching as Hermione reached their side.

“This year I’m going to take it easier with my schedule.” Hermione declared as they walked into the hall and continued on their way.

“That’s a relief,” Ron answered. “Does this mean that we’ll actually get to see you sometimes?”

“You’d be seeing me anyway, Ron-the NEWTs are only-“

“Give studying a break for once, will you, ‘Mione?” Harry asked as Ron groaned.

Ginny came flying up to them, her cheeks flushed and her dark eyes sparkling cheerfully. “*Hecate*, have you guys seen *Draco* this morning?” she giggled breathlessly, blushing deeper as she said his name.

“Are you feeling all right, Ginny?” Hermione asked worriedly, touching her friend’s forehead as Ron gaped.

“Did you just call Malfoy-*DRACO*?”

“Why would we want to see him, Ginny?” Harry asked before Ron could erupt. “He’s a thorn in our side-I would personally be much happier to never see him.”

“He’s different today…” Ginny sighed, looking earnestly at Harry. “Honestly, I’m not making this up at all. *Hermione*, he *told* me to call him Draco!” She continued as she fell into step beside the trio.

“Anything *Malfoy* does has an agenda, Ginny,” Ron spat, glaring at his sister. “Don’t be getting all gaga over him, got it?”

“Ron--” Ginny began crossly, but stopped at the sight of her friends’ expressions. The trio paused, surprised, as Draco drifted along the corridor, pausing to admire a particularly colorful portrait, to finger a silvery tapestry in subtle bemusement, to run a gentle hand over the breastplate of a shining suit of armor.

“What’s wrong with him?” Ron muttered at Harry, frowning when Ginny smiled again.

“I don’t know what it is,” she whispered, “But he’s been really great! I accidentally ran into him a few minutes ago, and all he did was grin at me and ruffle my hair! He *smiled*!”

“There’s something off about him…” Hermione murmured, narrowing her eyes in contemplation.

Harry agreed with her silently, his green eyes sweeping in the scene, cataloguing and filing away every detail. “He’s--”

Before he could continue, Draco turned toward them, a curious melancholic wistfulness changing to surprise as he elegantly made his way over to them.

“Hermione…” Draco breathed in dumbfounded astonishment, his eyes large and coolly molten in his face. It was the most open expression Harry had ever seen from the other boy.

Ron stepped protectively in front of Hermione, and Draco cocked his head to the side, looking at Ron curiously. “You stay away from her, Malfoy.”

Hermione’s face was hard with anger, and she tilted her chin disdainfully. “What? No mudblood comments today?”

Draco’s face shuttered immediately, and the Malfoy smirk they were all used to appeared. “Oh, do forgive me,” Draco drawled icily. “My mistake-I should have realized that the... Gryffindorks hadn’t housetrained their pet yet.”

Hermione’s eyes widened angrily and she took a step forward. Draco laughed maliciously, taking a step back. “Don’t try to touch me, Granger. I already took a shower this morning, and it’s much too early to get dirty again.” He gracefully tossed his hair, and passed them contemptuously. “Now, I have better things to do with my time. If you will excuse me.” Draco’s eyes slid over Harry as he passed his rival.

The four Gryffindors watched Draco saunter away, and Ron whirled to Ginny. “*What’s* this about Malfoy *changing*?”

“He wasn’t this mean to me!” Ginny defended herself angrily. “He was being perfectly nice until you reminded him of how he used to act!”

“My sister’s a nut!” Ron exclaimed. “She’s an absolute nut, gawking over Malfoy, isn’t she, Harry?” Ron turned to find Harry staring at Draco’s retreating back. “Harry?”

“There’s something different about him, Ron.” Harry murmured. “I can’t place it…it’s not something really physical, yet…his hair is different…he’s walking differently-not the usual ‘I’m rich watch out’ walk, but more of an ‘I’m comfortable with myself’ walk…” Harry tilted his head to look at Hermione. “And did you notice that he didn’t call Hermione a ‘mudblood’, even after she pointed out his odd behavior?”

Ron looked at him blankly. “Uh…no? How do you know all of that?”

“I looked, Ron,” Harry rolled his eyes. “You okay, Herm?”

Hermione nodded, and Harry shifted uneasily as he noticed the look on Ginny’s face. “What?”

“It’s just… you were right.” Ginny stated, watching him curiously. “I mean…that’s what was different about him… How did you know…?”

Harry flushed. “Are you trying to say something, Ginny?” he asked.

Ginny blushed furiously. “Oh, no-no, no, no! I wasn’t trying to say anything! Just thinking out loud… Uh…I’m hungry-I’m going to the dining room now.” Without another word, Ginny turned and walked quickly away from the trio. Hermione opened her mouth, a frown knitting her forehead.

“Do you have something you want to add?” Harry asked Hermione crossly, and she frantically shook her head, her mouth shutting with a snap.

“I don’t have anything to say at all.”

“That’s something new,” Ron teased her, and they continued on their way to breakfast.

“Be quiet, Ronald Weasley!” They pushed open the doors and went to their seats. Ginny refused to meet Harry’s gaze, tracing the grain of the table beneath her hand.

Professor Dumbledore stood up and raised his hand. “Before we begin breakfast, I have an important announcement. Professor Trelawny has brought to my attention that we have very few strong gifts lately. In previous years, we have had certain incidences of a powerful talent, such as a gift for charms, or the Adava Kedavra curse, and in some extreme cases, a magical ability with animals, such as Parseltongue, and a few more concrete aptitudes, such as animal speech, telepathy, etc. These gifts have been dwindling just as we need them the most. In an effort to confront these shortages, the morning classes for tomorrow are cancelled, and you, the students, will be tested for a range of different gifts. Gifts as a rule are extremely rare, so don’t be surprised if you don’t have one. It doesn’t make you any less of a wizard. Those who are discovered to have dormant gifts will receive training immediately. Does anyone have any questions?”

There was a general buzzing among the students, and Harry frowned when he saw Draco’s hand shoot up into the air.

“Mister Malfoy?”

The hall fell quiet, wondering what the Slytherin was going to say. Probably something concerning Death Eater abilities. After all, he’s one of them, isn’t he? Harry wondered somewhat bitterly.

“Why are you doing this now? Simply because You-know-who’s come back?” Draco shrugged. “He’s technically been back since Harry Potter’s first year, which is a bloody fantastic piece of coincidence, if you ask me.”

“Are you saying-“ Ron jumped up furiously in Harry’s defense.

“I’m not saying anything about him, Weasley!” Draco interrupted, glaring at the red-haired boy. “Take your bloody self-righteousness and sit down with it, for once.” Draco stood up as Ron sat down, gaping, and stared at Dumbledore calmly. “So, again. Why now? Do you have some sort of information that the rest of us don’t?”

“Should you even be asking that question, Death Eater?” someone from Ravenclaw shouted in Draco’s direction. “You probably have all the information about You-know-who that you need!”

Draco's head turned to look at the boy intently. “Casting stones without thinking about *your* actions, I see,” Draco declared calmly, staring at the boy dispassionately. “Think before you speak, because you’re right. You *don’t* know what other people know, do you?” The boy gulped and fell silent, looking down at the table. Draco turned back to Dumbledore. “Because I honestly don’t see the necessity, if that’s your only reason, Headmaster. He’s been ‘coming back’ for years.”

“You raise a very good question, Mr. Malfoy.”

Draco snorted, rolling his eyes.

“But I can’t answer that right now. Just rest assured that this testing is necessary. I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t absolutely integral to our future. Do you understand?” Draco sat back down and faced his plate quietly. “Very well, any other questions?”

“Is there a list of these talents?” Hermione called out, and Dumbledore smiled, his blue eyes twinkling.

“Ah, yes, there is, Miss Granger. For any of the more intellectually interested of our students, there are several texts in the library that list and describe the talents we will be testing for tomorrow.”

“I still don’t understand why this is necessary, Professor Dumbledore,” Draco complained. “Isn’t this dangerous?”

“What, are you afraid?” Ron spat angrily at him, and Draco turned, his face completely devoid of expression.

“A Malfoy isn’t afraid of anything. I’m not afraid of tomorrow morning-indeed, if I discover I have a useful talent, such as…oh, an extra helping of the ability to make money, I’ll be sure to pass it directly to you.”

Harry and the twins leapt over Ron as his face purpled in anger. Harry locked eyes with Draco, confused to see no expression on his face whatsoever, as he remained calmly sitting at the Slytherin table. “Let it go, Ron!” Harry murmured. “Just don’t let him get to you.”

Dumbledore smiled, and clapped his hands. “That was very entertaining, indeed! Does anyone else have anything to add?” He looked curiously at the rest of the student body, waiting for another question. When it became obvious that none was forthcoming, Dumbledore’s smile brightened and he brought in breakfast.

“Wow!” Hermione declared enthusiastically as they began to eat. “I wonder what kinds of talents there are!”

“I’ll probably have something stupid, like turning into a tree, or something,” Ron mumbled glumly.

“Who says we have to be *anything*?” Harry protested. “Why can’t we just be normal wizards?”

“What’s the fun in that?” Ron asked. “Dumbledore even said it-most of us won’t have any dormant gifts anyway. So it’s fun to pretend.”

“If you say so,” Harry murmured quietly, still unconvinced. Regardless, he didn’t want to argue, so he shut away his doubts and continued eating.

~&~&~&~&~&~&~&~&~&~&~

Draco sighed, picking at his food as he fought off the urge to rub his sore head. He’d forgotten how many headaches he’d gotten while in Slytherin. He was also worried that he had overdone the taunting this morning-it had been so long since he had been at odds with any of them… He wished he could remember exactly how he acted before…

“Draco!” Pansy giggled. “Do you think something’s actually going to happen tomorrow?”

“It’s always possible, my dear.” Draco murmured, hiding a wince as Pansy’s giggling deepened his headache.

“Draco,” Pansy was suddenly serious, gently touching his arm as she stared intently up at him. “Did you ask all of those questions for a particular reason? Is there something we should know?”

“It’s a feeling, Pansy,” Draco murmured. “I don’t have any evidence, backed by say, my father or anything. It’s my personal curiosity.”

“Oh,” Pansy breathed in relief. “Because if You-know-who attacked tomorrow morning-“

“Hogwarts would be vulnerable.” Draco finished, gracing Pansy with a small smile. Ah, that girl did have a brain. It was really such a pity that her tastes ran to pink-she would look lovely in royal blue. Regardless, at least Draco knew that Pansy was his ally, and not with the Death Eaters.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Draco lied, patting Pansy’s hand. “But it’s going to change things greatly, for better, or for worse.”

“You sound like you already know what’s going to happen, Draco.”

“Don’t be silly, Pansy,” Draco gave her a charming smile. “After all, who in the world actually knows what will happen in the future?”

So you hate this part with a passion? Hm. I don't think it quite carries over the mood of part one, because we immediately see Draco being oddly happy about being back. That set up the mood for me as being lighter than the first part; it got more on track when Draco started antagonizing Harry&co. again. Once more, talk to me if you need a sounding board. I'm such a Draco slut, I'd be more than happy to help.

Thanks!! And the way I saw it, was he was like 'wow, I don't really remember things being like this' And things are REALLY bad where he's from, so he's just kind of 'everything's here!' You know?

[identity profile] ishuca.livejournal.com 2002-09-14 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmmm... yes, it *was* a huge change in tone from the first part. but that makes sense, especially since you spend most of the chapter in a gryffindor perspective.

are you worried about the chapter's believability after the first one? because i think you handled the transition pretty well. i'm not sure on what more you could do, except for more draco exposition. :thinks:

maybe the thing is that he took the transfer extraordinarily well. almost too well? but he would, unless he's angsty!draco. which i don't think that he naturally is. i don't know. anyway, i can see how the change in style could be jarring, but that fits. the only thing i'd suggest is expositing draco with a couple of well placed sentences. other than that, it seems fine.

i liked!

I really do hate this passionately, but it was the only way I could think of to get to the next part. As for Draco, I'm not sure whether I should do the entire story from Draco's perspective, which is why I was hesitant about Harry & Co. It's just, I think there are things that I want to do that are better from their perspective--I want to provide the contrast between their thoughts on Draco and the way Draco is seeing things, and trying to perform the way he used to be.

And he was supposed to take the transition well--the spell that he cast was SUPPOSED to take him back in the past--it's just he was surprised that it worked period. Also, he's got kind of a rose-colored view of his childhood.

Maybe he just breezed through the part without enough mistakes, but he makes plenty of mistakes in the next part, so maybe it'll even it out a bit....I dunno. :)

i like this version better.

the few lines you inserted have really got the chapter moving much better. it makes the entire thing more believable and fluid, i think.

:sighs happily: sometimes all it takes is a couple of lines, you know? chapter nine of my WIP had *issues*, where i knew that i had written out everything as it should be, but even so it wasn't quite right. i let it sit for a week and was able to go back and fix it. strangely enough, it was an exposition on *walls* (of all things) that finally did the job. @_@;

so don't worry. the base material is good and sound. and this version fits with the overall theme wonderfully. kudos!

who indeed.

::whimper-sighs::

i love this mori...

more and soon and please and look, i'm not even pestering you about my story and yeah.

i love your draco, you always manage to make him fresh, instead of tired and trite and the same ole same ole and i just loves him.

::blushes::

::whispers::

do you think i could play with him for a while?

::looks hopeful::

[identity profile] moriavis.livejournal.com 2002-09-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
*blushes* Do you really love this? *looks ashamed* I'm sorry I haven't finished your story, but this attacked me and I had to go with it, you know? And how can you love my Draco? o.O
He IS tired and trite and the same ole same ole. *grins* He's my impression gathered from every single HP fanfic I've read!! *laughs* Of course you can play with him for a while, sweetie. As long as I eventually get him back. :)

[identity profile] ex-dark-soul916.livejournal.com 2002-09-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
::is taken aback::

of COURSE you'll get him back!!

you need him to finish VPR after all!!

::sighs::

and he is none of those things because YOU breath LIFE into him, you really do mor!

and what brought on *both*; mood and vpr?!

Re:

[identity profile] moriavis.livejournal.com 2002-09-21 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so you like VPR that much? *blushes* I breathe life into him, huh? I just don't see it. *sighs* As for what brought on VPR, Draco!muse was griping in my head about how Harry is always the one that gets the special powers, and that he wanted one too. So poof. VPR was born. :) As for the mood, I really do think it was because I was sick--the worst opponent to anything creative is throwing up and an upset stomach. :) *huggles*

[identity profile] ex-dark-soul916.livejournal.com 2002-09-21 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
oh babes!!

::wips up some chicken noodle soup::

::loves::

and, personally, if *any*one is getting special powers in one of my fics it is TOTALLY going to be draco!!

*totally*

Thanks. *huggles* I know! Draco just deserves a power, you know? :)
