Alex flopped down on the grass and stared up into the sky. The sprinklers had gone off not too long ago, and he could feel the moisture seep through the back of his shirt, the fabric sticking to his skin. His mom would probably yell at him later for getting another one of his shirts dirty, but it was a perfect day to be outside — warm but not too hot, a breeze stirring the leaves above his head.
He was about to close his eyes and see if he could slide in a nap before dinner, but then he heard the sound of Raven's tennis shoes in the grass and grinned, even though he knew he should hide it. Raven might have been in a mood for a practical joke, and Alex was leaving himself wide open for it. There was the brush of something soft against the tip of his nose, and Alex laughed, allowing himself to open his eyes and stare up at Raven.
Raven was dangling a vine of honeysuckle over Alex's face, and Alex shoved an elbow into the soft grass, levering himself up so he could grab the flowers. "Hey, thanks." He patted the ground next to him and offered Raven the first flower on the vine. He absolutely didn't watch as Raven carefully removed the calyx and sipped the nectar from the small blossom.
"What made you decide to come out here?" Raven picked up the vine of honeysuckle until Alex straightened up, and then laid it over both of their laps. Alex's shoulder was warm where they leaned against each other.
Alex shrugged in answer to Raven's question, feeling the tug of Raven's t-shirt as the fabric moved against his arm. "There's something to be said for the joys of adventure in the wild."
He didn't have to look at Raven to see Raven's amusement, but he turned to look anyway, cataloging the way his brother's hazel eyes looked almost green in the sunlight. "The wilderness of Dad's interest in horticulture?"
"Don't be so literal," Alex said sourly. "Use your imagination."
Raven didn't bother to hide his smile that time. Alex didn't mind. "Of course."
"We practically have a river." Alex hopped to his feet and walked along the edge of the small creek his father had dug. He crawled onto the rail of the small foot bridge that spanned it, pinwheeling his arms as he pretended to lose his balance. He could feel the push of Raven's telekinesis maintaining his equilibrium and looked back, flashing a wide, bright smile.
"Get back here before I let you fall in." Raven was looking at the honeysuckle still, but after what had just happened Alex knew it was just a front.
"You wouldn't," Alex said, but he also knew better than to test Raven.
Depending on Raven's mood, he just might do it. Alex went back to the tree and sat down beside Raven again, watching him from the corner of his eye. They were identical twins, but Alex always felt like Raven was the better of them. Yeah, Raven couldn't clean up after himself worth a damn and he indiscriminately stole clothes from Alex's closet and he wouldn't let Alex copy his homework even when Alex begged and pleaded and promised to do Raven's chores for a month—
But Raven was the best. He didn't slack off like Alex did, but instead of doing his homework today, he came out to sit with Alex and offer him honeysuckle. "Where's everyone else?" Alex cleared his throat, the words forced out past the lump in his throat.
Raven cut his eyes to the side; Alex was very aware how green they were. "Mom and Dad took Abby to the movies."
"The movies?" Alex perked up. "Why didn't they tell me?"
"I told them we had plans," Raven said calmly.
"Plans? I don't have any—" Alex cut himself off when he felt Raven's fingers curl around his hand in the grass, and he could feel his cheeks flush. "Oh. Yeah." He laced their fingers together and squeezed. "Good call."
Raven pulled a honeysuckle blossom from the vine and pressed it to Alex's lips. Alex sucked out the hint of sweetness, there and gone, but his attention was locked on the embrace of their hands. His heart was starting to pound in his chest, leaving him dizzy and breathless with anticipation. Raven glanced at Alex from the corner of his eye again, and somehow that gave Alex the strength to reach out with his other hand, to brush away the honeysuckle and settle into Raven's lap.
"Alex, what—?" Alex could see the bob of Raven's adam's apple, and Alex felt a sudden yearning, leaning forward and fastening his mouth against the hollow. He set his teeth there, gentle, but Raven still shuddered, tilting his head back as his pulse raced against Alex's tongue. It made Alex feel bolder, the fact that Raven hadn't said no, and he kissed his way up Raven's throat, pressing his teeth against Raven's skin until he heard a soft whimper.
"Raven? Alex panted against Raven's throat, the skin growing hot and damp.
"Yes?" He could feel the change in Raven, feel his older-brother-by-half-an-hour concern rearing its head as Raven draped his arms around Alex's hips, holding him close. "What is it?"
"Kiss me?" The few times that they'd kissed before, Alex was always the one taking the opportunity, always the one to be impatient and greedy. He glanced at Raven, and sure enough, Raven was smiling, although his eyes were a warm hazel as he watched Alex.
"Sometimes I don't know what to think of you," Raven murmured.
Alex averted his eyes. "Liar."
"Alex." Alex could feel the weight of Raven's eyes on him, and he shifted, trailing his fingers through the grass at his knee. "You're kind of an idiot, but I love you anyway."
"Shut up." When Raven didn't say anything more, Alex darted a look at his brother's face.
"You want to kiss me, and yet you're the one being rude," Raven teased, and then he tilted Alex's head and pressed closer.
Raven's mouth was warm, chaste and closed, his mouth a little waxy from chapstick, and Alex felt like he flushed with heat all the way down to his toes. He had kissed other people before, but French kissing a girl under the bleachers at school held nothing in comparison to this. He didn't even care that kissing Raven was probably the weirdest thing ever. He wanted to pry Raven's mouth open and find out what honeysuckle tasted like on Raven's tongue, but he didn't push.
Raven called him a narcissist. Alex privately thought he was just in love.
Raven pulled back from the kiss and tapped his fingers against Alex's jaw. "Are you feeling better now?"
"Yeah." Alex cut his eyes to the side and stood, brushing off his trousers. He said, "Let's go watch Independence Day," just to see Raven's eyes light up.
Raven took his hand again, and as they walked back into the house, Alex couldn't help but smile.
